Job summary

Network Rail in the United Kingdom is recruiting a Section Supervisor to support the Section Manager with inspection, maintenance and renewal of assets. You will supervise a team, manage delivery within budget and ensure compliance with standards and Safe System of Work.

The role involves high voltage overhead line equipment, working at height, shift work including nights and weekends, and on-call duties. You will help with asset condition assessments and developing work plans while coaching

About The Role

The Section Supervisor assists the Section Manager in the inspection, maintenance and renewal of assets to standards and within agreed resource levels, budget and unit cost measures. They supervise the delivery of work and undertake specific inspections as required. They also assist in the management of staff as directed.

More About Overhead Line Equipment...

You'll be Supervising a team who work with high voltage systems, ensuring our railway has the power to run the trains. The Overhead Line team work regularly at height, using various types of specialist tools and equipment to measure, adjust, repair and modify the cables and wires that keep Britain's railway running. This is a safety critical role where you'll be required to work shifts including nights and weekends. Some 'On Call' working may also be required.

You will be responsible for supervising and assuring the quality of work delivered, ensuring all assets and activities comply with relevant standards, company policies, and safe systems of work. This includes carrying out inspections, prioritising work, preparing method statements and Safe System of Work Plans, and supporting the development of work plans that enable delivery to be safe, efficient, and compliant. You will also contribute to asset management by assisting with asset condition assessments, identifying renewal requirements, and ensuring work is delivered in line with maintenance plans.

In addition, you will support effective team and resource management by assisting with resource allocation, staff supervision, and monitoring work quality, compliance, and asset condition. You will help maintain accurate systems, records, and databases, contribute to staff competence, welfare, and disciplinary processes where required, and carry out staff surveillance activities as directed. Ongoing personal development and supporting the development of others forms a key part of the role.

This role will involve shift work including night and weekend working and to cover on-call when required.

Key Accountabilities

• Supervise and check the quality of work delivered and confirm assets are compliant to standards.
• Carry out work safely and in accordance with the safe systems of work procedures, method statements and other instructions.
• Adhere to company policies and procedures.
• Undertake specific inspections in accordance with standards as directed.
• Prioritise work arising.
• Prepare work and resource specifications and method statements including Safe System of Work Plans.
• Assist in the development of work plans that enables work to be delivered safely, efficiently and compliant to standards.
• Assist in the identification and proposal of asset renewals.
• Assist in the allocation of resources.
• Deliver work in accordance with the relevant maintenance plans.
• Provide appropriate information to update systems, databases and records.
• Undertake a programme of staff surveillance, work quality, compliance and asset condition checks as directed.
• Assist in the management, control and discipline of staff as directed.
• Assist in the monitoring and review of staff competence and welfare.
• Contribute to your own development and that of others.

Your experience and skills

• Knowledge of relevant standards, procedures and instructions.

• Hold and retain competencies relevant to this post and required by business need.
• Ideally hold (or be working towards) an NVQ level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject or have attained the appropriate level of knowledge gained through equivalent relevant experience.
