Full-time Secondary Welfare Support Assistant – Winchester, Hampshire

Are you a compassionate and resilient individual with a background in youth work, social care, or pastoral support?

GSL Education are currently seeking a Secondary Welfare Support Assistant to join a welcoming and supportive secondary school in Winchester. The role is to start ASAP or from September 2025 for the right candidate. The role offers a competitive salary ranging from £21,500 to £24,500 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications. This position is ideal for someone with experience or transferable skills in working with young people, particularly in roles such as youth worker, social worker, or pastoral support.

As a Secondary Welfare Support Assistant, you will be a key member of the pastoral and welfare team, helping to support students across the school who may be experiencing social, emotional, or mental health challenges. You will be on-call to respond to individual students in need and will help create a safe and nurturing environment where they feel heard and supported.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide pastoral support to students with social, emotional, and mental health needs.
  • Work closely with pastoral leaders to respond to students in crisis or needing support.
  • Foster strong, trusting relationships with students to promote wellbeing and engagement.
  • Help maintain a calm and supportive school environment by de-escalating situations when needed.
  • Liaise with staff, families, and external agencies to ensure appropriate support strategies are in place.
  • Monitor student wellbeing and contribute to behaviour and attendance interventions.
  • Be an active and approachable presence around the school throughout the day.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience or transferable skills from roles such as youth work, social work, or pastoral care.
  • Strong communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills.
  • A calm and non-judgemental approach to supporting students.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and build positive relationships with students and staff.
  • Flexibility to respond to student needs throughout the school day.
  • Availability to work from 8:30am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday (term time only).
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
