Job Title: Secondary Teaching Assistant
Location: Portsmouth, Hampshire
Salary: £12.82 per hour
Start Date: Immediate/September 2025
Contract: Full-time (Part-time can also be arranged for the right candidate)

GSL Education are proud to be recruiting for a Secondary Teaching Assistant to join a friendly and inclusive mainstream secondary school in Portsmouth. In this role, you will support students aged 11–16 in their day-to-day learning, both inside and outside the classroom. You’ll work closely with teachers and other staff members to ensure that all learners can access the curriculum, participate in class activities, and develop key academic and life skills in a safe, nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist teachers in delivering lessons by supporting pupils with varying levels of ability.
  • Work with small groups and individuals to offer tailored academic or behavioural support.
  • Encourage positive learning behaviours and help students stay focused and motivated.
  • Support students with additional learning needs, adapting approaches where needed.
  • Prepare and organise classroom resources and materials when required.
  • Contribute to monitoring and reporting on pupil progress and engagement.
  • Help maintain a calm, respectful classroom environment in line with school expectations.
  • Support with duties outside of lessons, such as lunch supervision or extracurricular activities.

Job Requirements:

  • Prior experience working with children or young people is desirable but not essential.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A friendly, patient, and proactive attitude.
  • Flexibility to adapt to the needs of individual students or groups.
  • Ideal for university students studying Education, Psychology, Youth Work, or similar.
  • A genuine interest in helping students achieve their best both academically and personally.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years, barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
