Job summary

Opera North in Leeds is seeking a Wigs, Hair & Make Up assistant to support the Wigs, Hair & Make Up team in delivering high-quality designs for stage productions. You will apply wigs, facial hair and makeup for performances and quick changes, and assist with the preparation and maintenance of show wigs and prosthetics.

You will attend rehearsals and calls, work to department health and safety standards, travel to venues as required, and hold a fixed-term full-time contract for two months,

Qualifications

• Previous experience as Wigs, Hair & Make Up assistant in theatre/theatre touring preferred.
• Experience with preparation and application of prosthetics.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Apply wigs/facial hair and hair styling before performances and during quick changes.
• Apply makeup for theatre productions.
• Assist with preparation and maintenance of show wigs (modern and period).
• Familiarize with show plots to cover absences and make notes for colleagues.
• Attend rehearsals, show calls, maintenance calls, get-ins/outs as scheduled.
• Comply with Health & Safety requirements.

Job description

The purpose of this role is to assist the Wigs, Hair & Make up team in the smooth operation of the department. Ensuring good communication and high standards in the realisation of wigs and make-up designs for Opera North.

Key Accountabilities:

• Application of wigs/facial hair and hair styling before a performance and during quick changes.
• Application of all aspects of makeup associated with theatre.
• Assisting with the preparation and daily maintenance of all show wigs [modern and period] as required and to maintain the departments high standards.
• Acquiring a familiarity with all show plots to allow for absence cover for others in the team and make accurate notes for others.
• Attending all rehearsals, show calls, maintenance calls, get ins, fit ups, get outs as scheduled.
• Always complying with the department/company/venue Health & safety requirements.

Person Specification:

• Previous experience working as a Wigs, Hair & Make Up assistant in theatre and touring is essential.
• Previous experience of preparation and application of prosthetics.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

Contract type: Fixed Term, Full Time (2 months)

Hours of work: An average of 44 hours per week, across the contracted period

Place of work: you will be based at Howard Opera Centre, Leeds (you’ll be expected to travel to other venues as part of the role also).
