Job description

Ophthalmic Theatre Practitioner - Scrub / ODP

Hours: Full-time, predominantly Monday-Friday / No Weekends

Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 Depending on experience + benefits

Contract: Full time / Permanent

An established specialist ophthalmic provider is looking to appoint an experienced Theatre Practitioner to join its clinical team, supporting surgical services across sites in East Grinstead and Oxshott.

This is an excellent opportunity for either an Operating Department Practitioner or Registered Nurse with scrub experience who is looking to work within a specialist ophthalmic environment.

The organisation provides a broad range of eye surgery and is able to offer further specialist training to someone who already has a strong grounding within theatres.

THE ROLE

Working as part of the theatre team, you will support elective ophthalmic surgical lists across East Grinstead and Oxshott.

The successful candidate will ideally have previous ophthalmic scrub experience, particularly within cataract surgery. Experience across both scrub and anaesthetics would be advantageous, although candidates with strength within one area will also be considered and additional training can be provided.

  • Corneal procedures
  • Vitreoretinal procedures
  • Other specialist ophthalmic procedures

The organisation recognises that candidates may not have experience across every specialist procedure and is able to provide training and development within the more specialist areas.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide safe and effective perioperative care to patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery.
  • Scrub for ophthalmic surgical procedures, including cataract surgery.
  • Prepare theatres, equipment and instrumentation ahead of surgical lists.
  • Work closely with surgeons and the wider multidisciplinary clinical team.
  • Support anaesthetic and sedation procedures where appropriately trained.
  • Maintain high standards of infection prevention, patient safety and clinical governance.
  • Complete all required clinical documentation accurately.
  • Support efficient theatre utilisation and patient flow.
  • Participate in training and continued professional development.
  • Work flexibly between the East Grinstead and Oxshott facilities when required.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

Applications are welcomed from either:

  • HCPC-registered Operating Department Practitioners; or
  • NMC-registered Nurses with theatre experience.

Previous ophthalmic scrub experience would be highly desirable, with cataract experience particularly beneficial.

Candidates who are experienced within theatre scrub but require additional training in some ophthalmic procedures may also be considered.

Experience within anaesthetics would be advantageous but is not essential for every applicant.

You will need to be comfortable travelling between East Grinstead and Oxshott when required. One location may act as your primary base depending on operational requirements and where you live.

WORKING PATTERN

The position is predominantly Monday to Friday with no regular weekend requirement.

Surgical list times can vary, meaning some days may involve earlier starts or later finishes. The organisation operates flexibly around these hours, with shorter working days or time back where appropriate.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

This role offers the opportunity to develop specialist ophthalmic theatre skills across a diverse range of procedures.

Candidates with strong core theatre experience will be supported in developing additional competencies, including more specialist ophthalmic procedures and cross-training where appropriate.
