Location: Hereford, Herefordshire

Start Date: As soon as possible

Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

School Information

A forward-thinking secondary school in Hereford is looking to recruit a reliable and practical Science Technician to support its Science Department. The school is committed to delivering engaging lessons that encourage curiosity, scientific enquiry and a strong understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The successful candidate will work closely with science teachers to ensure that practical lessons are properly resourced, equipment is maintained and laboratory environments remain safe and organised. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a scientific background or practical laboratory experience who would enjoy contributing to students' learning behind the scenes.

The Role

The Science Technician will provide technical and practical support across the Science Department, preparing materials and equipment for classroom demonstrations and laboratory experiments.

Responsibilities will include preparing apparatus, setting up practical activities and ensuring that teachers have the resources needed for lessons. The postholder will assist with preparing solutions and materials in accordance with departmental procedures, checking equipment before use and ensuring that practical activities can be delivered efficiently.

The successful candidate will maintain laboratory equipment, monitor stock levels and arrange the storage and replenishment of consumables. They will keep preparation rooms and laboratories organised, ensuring that equipment is returned appropriately and that materials are stored securely.

Health and safety will be central to the role. The technician will follow established procedures for handling chemicals, maintaining equipment and disposing of laboratory waste. They will help ensure that risk assessments and relevant safety information are available and that any damaged equipment or potential hazards are reported promptly.

The role will also involve supporting teachers with demonstrations, preparing resources for examinations and practical assessments, and helping maintain accurate inventories. The technician may assist with routine checks of laboratory facilities and contribute ideas for improving preparation systems and resource management.

Requirements

Candidates should have strong practical skills, good attention to detail and an interest in science education. Previous experience in a laboratory, school science department or technical support role would be advantageous.

Applicants should be organised, reliable and comfortable following detailed instructions. An understanding of laboratory safety, chemical handling and equipment maintenance would be beneficial, although training may be available for candidates with suitable transferable skills.

The successful applicant must be able to manage several preparation tasks, communicate effectively with teachers and maintain high standards of safety and organisation.

What the School Offers

The school offers a varied role within a collaborative Science Department, with opportunities to develop technical knowledge and contribute to practical learning across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The position would suit someone looking to build a long-term career in educational or laboratory support.
