Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced, organised and knowledgeable Senior Science Technician to join the Science Faculty at a well-established secondary school in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. This opportunity would suit a science technician who enjoys supporting practical learning, maintaining high laboratory standards and helping teachers deliver engaging lessons across Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The successful candidate will play a central role in ensuring that science laboratories are properly equipped, safe and ready for practical lessons. Alongside the day-to-day preparation of equipment and materials, the Senior Science Technician will take responsibility for stock control, laboratory organisation, health and safety procedures and the coordination of technical support.

Position Highlights
  • Senior technical role within a secondary school's Science Faculty.

  • Opportunity to support practical science teaching across multiple disciplines.

  • Responsibilities involving laboratory preparation, safety, equipment and stock management.

  • Suitable for an experienced technician ready to take on greater responsibility.

Role Overview

Working closely with science teachers and departmental leadership, you will coordinate the preparation and organisation of laboratory resources for lessons, demonstrations and practical assessments. You will help ensure that equipment is maintained, chemicals and materials are stored correctly, and laboratories comply with relevant safety procedures.

The role also involves planning ahead for the department's teaching programme, monitoring stock levels, arranging equipment repairs and supporting the smooth running of practical activities. Depending on the department's structure, you may also help train or guide junior technicians and contribute to the induction of new staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare apparatus, chemicals, specimens and other materials for Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons.

  • Ensure laboratory equipment is clean, functional, correctly stored and ready for use.

  • Coordinate the safe storage, labelling and inventory of chemicals and hazardous materials.

  • Follow relevant COSHH requirements and school health and safety procedures.

  • Complete routine laboratory checks and maintain records of inspections, maintenance and safety procedures.

  • Identify damaged or faulty equipment and arrange repairs or replacement where appropriate.

  • Monitor stock levels, source supplies and support purchasing and budget-control processes.

  • Work with teachers to prepare resources for demonstrations, practical investigations and examinations.

  • Ensure laboratories are organised and left in a safe condition following practical sessions.

  • Support the management of waste materials in accordance with applicable safety requirements.

  • Maintain accurate records of chemical inventories, equipment and resource use.

  • Provide technical guidance to teaching staff and support the work of junior technicians where required.

  • Assist with reviewing departmental procedures and improving the efficiency of laboratory preparation.

Experience and Skills
  • Previous experience as a Science Technician within a secondary school or educational setting is highly desirable.

  • Experience supporting Biology, Chemistry and Physics practical work.

  • A relevant science qualification or strong practical science background; a degree may be advantageous but should not be treated as essential unless specified by the school.

  • Good understanding of laboratory safety, chemical handling and COSHH requirements.

  • Experience maintaining equipment, managing stock and keeping accurate records.

  • Strong organisation and planning skills, with the ability to prepare resources to tight lesson schedules.

  • Confidence communicating with teachers, technicians and external suppliers.

  • Ability to work independently, use initiative and prioritise tasks during busy periods.
