Job summary

Protocol Education are seeking a dedicated Science Technician to join a secondary school in Stockton-on-Tees from September 2026. The role involves preparing resources, maintaining equipment and supporting science lessons while upholding high health and safety standards.

  • Constructing, setting up and checking specialist equipment prior to lessons.
  • Supporting teaching staff with practical demonstrations and experiments.
  • Providing practical lesson support and assisting with cover where required.
  • Assisting teachers with the planning and preparation of practical experiments.
  • Maintaining high standards of health and safety across Science facilities.
  • Carrying out routine visual checks of gas, electricity and water supplies.
  • Maintaining accurate inventories of equipment, chemicals and resources.
  • Ordering equipment, resources and stationery as required.

Science Technician – Secondary School

Location: Stockton-on-Tees
Start Date: September 2026
Contract: Full-Time

Protocol Education are currently recruiting for a Science Technician to join a secondary school in Stockton-on-Tees from September 2026.

This is an excellent opportunity for an organised, proactive and safety-conscious individual to become an integral part of the Science Department, supporting teachers and students to ensure practical lessons and experiments run safely, efficiently and effectively.

The Role

As a Science Technician, you will play a key role in preparing and maintaining the resources, equipment and specialist facilities required for practical Science teaching. You will work closely with teaching staff to support engaging practical lessons across the department, while ensuring high standards of health and safety are maintained at all times.

Key Responsibilities

Lesson Preparation & Support

  • Organising apparatus and preparing resources for practical lessons
  • Constructing, setting up and checking specialist equipment prior to lessons
  • Supporting teaching staff with practical demonstrations and experiments
  • Providing practical lesson support and assisting with cover where required

Departmental Planning

  • Assisting teachers with the planning and preparation of practical experiments
  • Working collaboratively with the Science Department to ensure resources are available when needed
  • Supporting departmental colleagues and assisting with duties during periods of staff absence

Health & Safety

  • Taking an active role in maintaining high standards of health and safety across Science facilities
  • Carrying out routine visual checks of gas, electricity and water supplies
  • Undertaking Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) where required
  • Supporting the completion and management of risk assessments
  • Ensuring hazardous substances and specialist apparatus are safely stored, monitored and handled in line with relevant procedures

Resource & Equipment Management

  • Cleaning, clearing and safely storing apparatus following practical lessons
  • Maintaining accurate inventories of equipment, chemicals and resources
  • Regularly auditing stock levels and identifying resource requirements
  • Ordering equipment, resources and stationery as required
  • Carrying out routine maintenance and minor repairs where appropriate
  • Maintaining an organised and safe working environment within laboratories and preparation areas
About You

The ideal candidate will be highly organised, proactive and committed to maintaining excellent standards of safety. You will have the ability to work independently while also being a collaborative member of the wider Science and school team.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience working in a Science Technician role or a similar practical/scientific environment
  • Strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail
  • The ability to manage stock, maintain equipment and keep resources organised
  • A good understanding of health and safety procedures
  • A proactive approach and the ability to use initiative
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • A commitment to safeguarding and protecting children and young people
  • A willingness to follow school and academy policies and procedures at all times
  • A commitment to GDPR and data protection requirements when handling confidential information
  • A willingness to contribute to wider trust meetings, working groups and departmental briefings where required

An Enhanced DBS check will be required for this role.
