Job summary

Meoncross School is seeking a Science Technician to support the delivery of a high-quality science curriculum and to help with the Food Technology department. You will prepare laboratories, maintain equipment, manage stock and ensure health and safety compliance.

Working with teaching staff, you will contribute to a safe, engaging learning environment and provide practical support to pupils and colleagues, throughout term-time.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) including English, Maths and Science.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive, flexible approach.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a busy school environment.
  • Experience handling resources, stock control and maintaining accurate records.
  • Good understanding of health and safety procedures and safe working practices.
  • Experience in a Science Technician, Food Technology Technician or similar support role.
  • Experience working in an educational setting.
  • First Aid training and experience.
  • Knowledge of CLEAPSS guidance, COSHH regulations and equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, organise and set up equipment, materials and resources for Science and Food Technology lessons, ensuring everything is ready to support effective practical learning.
  • Support teachers and pupils during practical activities, demonstrations and investigations, providing assistance where required.
  • Maintain science laboratories, preparation rooms and food technology areas to a high standard, ensuring they are safe, clean, organised and fully stocked.
  • Manage the storage, maintenance and testing of specialist equipment, ensuring resources remain in good working order and are readily available for use.
  • Monitor stock levels of chemicals, ingredients, equipment and consumables, placing orders and liaising with suppliers as required.
  • Ensure the safe storage, handling and disposal of chemicals, food products, waste materials and equipment in line with relevant regulations and best practice.
  • Carry out routine safety checks, maintain records and support risk assessment processes to promote a safe learning environment.
  • Assist with departmental administration, including inventory management, budgeting records and resource tracking.
  • Support the delivery of enrichment activities, educational visits, science clubs and school events where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of practical resources, processes and learning environments across both departments.
  • Promote high standards of health and safety, food hygiene, safeguarding and compliance at all times.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching and support staff to ensure pupils have access to high-quality practical learning experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity and achievement.
  • Support the wider aims and values of the school, contributing positively to the school community and maintaining professional standards at all times.

Role Purpose

As a Science Technician, you will support the delivery of an engaging and high-quality Science curriculum by preparing, maintaining and organising laboratories, equipment and resources for practical lessons. Working closely with teaching staff, you will help ensure a safe, efficient and stimulating learning environment while maintaining high standards of health and safety and regulatory compliance.

You will also provide practical support to the Food Technology department, assisting with the organisation of ingredients, equipment and teaching resources to ensure the smooth running of lessons. As a valued member of the school community, you will work collaboratively with colleagues, contribute to the school's positive ethos and help create an environment where pupils can thrive.
