Job summary

AWD Online is seeking a Science Technician to support a busy science department at a secondary school in Hedge End, Southampton. The role focuses on preparing equipment, maintaining lab stock, and assisting with safe, engaging practical lessons.

You will work under the Senior Science Technician, ensuring equipment is safe and ready for use, and contribute to a high-quality science curriculum with potential for development and CPD.

Qualifications

• GCSE in Science or equivalent.
• Good science subject knowledge and a genuine interest in supporting practical learning.
• Good ICT skills.
• Excellent organisational skills with strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Flexible approach with the ability to manage a wide range of tasks and support other areas of the school when needed.
• Patient, tactful and diplomatic approach when working with staff and students.
• Ability to support safe working practices in a school laboratory environment.
• Hold a valid First Aid at Work certificate.

Responsibilities

• Prepare equipment, resources and materials for demonstrations, experiments and practical lessons.
• Set up equipment, apparatus and materials for science experiments at staff request.
• Clear, clean and maintain apparatus and other science equipment.
• Monitor, organise and replenish laboratory resources and materials.
• Support safe working practices, including COSHH and CLEAPSS procedures.
• Prepare solutions and simple apparatus for lessons and events.
• Assist teachers during practical sessions and help cover or supply materials.
• Coordinate equipment for STEM club and enrichment activities.
• Maintain inventory checks and stock control for science resources.
