Job summary

The Mercian Trust is seeking a dedicated Caretaker for Shire Oak Academy in Brownhills. You will oversee security, cleanliness, and maintenance of the site, support deliveries, and ensure health and safety compliance across facilities.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, responsibilities include maintaining logs, schedules, and compliance records, while upholding high standards of workmanship and safety. A proactive approach to safety and problem-solving is essential.

Qualifications

• Good standard of education, including literacy and numeracy.
• First aid, fire safety, asbestos awareness, legionella awareness and manual handling training, or willingness to complete these.
• Working knowledge of health and safety legislation and good practice relevant to school premises.
• Knowledge of fire safety, COSHH, asbestos management, legionella control, security and safeguarding procedures.
• Ability to organise workload and maintain consistently high standards; ability to inspect premises, identify defects and risks, prioritise work and arrange effective solutions.
• Ability to implement maintenance programmes and respond calmly to emergencies.
• Good written, verbal and digital communication skills, including maintaining logs, schedules and compliance records.
• Practical maintenance and problem-solving skills, with the judgement to recognise when specialist support is required.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible for the security, safety, maintenance, and cleanliness of the site and buildings.
• Provide porterage of Academy deliveries.
• To undertake tasks to ensure the maintenance, security and health and safety of the school site (including grounds, buildings, facilities and equipment, ensuring efficient and effective operation).
• Responsible for health and safety compliance requirements.
