School Health Staff Nurse (Safeguarding team)

We are excited to announce an opportunity for a Band 5 Nurse to join our School Nursing Safeguarding Team on a fixed-term contract. As part of our commitment to growing and developing our workforce, we aim to retain the successful candidate and support their progression into the SCPHN (Specialist Community Public Health Nurse) School Nurse pathway.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to apply for a funded SCPHN School Nurse training programme, starting in January 2026, through an internal interview and selection process. This position offers a unique chance to be part of a dynamic team while building a long-term career in school nursing.

The team seeks an enthusiastic and motivated nurse passionate about the 5-19 Healthy Child Programme and safeguarding children and young people. Experience working with children in a community setting and a good understanding of public health are desirable.

We are committed to training and developing future SCPHN School Nurses within our service.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively within a dynamic skill-mix team. Responsibilities include conducting Health Needs Assessments, attending child protection case conferences, core group meetings, and other strategy meetings. To prepare for these duties, a comprehensive competency document will be provided, and the candidate will work unsupervised once deemed competent. They will manage a caseload of primary schools, enabling them to build strong connections and support children and families effectively. Additionally, there will be opportunities to visit other teams within the service for broader exposure and professional development.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will be an integral part of a multi-skilled school nurse team, working collaboratively to deliver a public health-focused, needs-led, and equitable service to children and young people in Lewisham. They will liaise closely with school staff, community paediatricians, health visitors, GPs, and other professionals to ensure effective service delivery.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Recording and monitoring services delivered, providing updates to the Team Leader.
  • Attending child protection case conferences, core group meetings, and safeguarding discussions.
  • Supporting health promotion programmes and contributing to wider service areas within school and community settings.

This role plays a vital part in safeguarding and promoting the health and well-being of children and young people.

  • Experience working with children and in school nursing
  • Safeguarding children experience
  • Experience attending case conferences, child in need meetings, and completing health assessments and reports, including LAC assessments
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with diverse backgrounds and ages
  • Good organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Understanding of the role of the school nurse
  • Knowledge of DH drivers for public health services for school-aged children, e.g., Childhood Measurement Programme, Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives, Every Child Matters, and the 'Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives' strategy
  • Awareness of local policies such as the Children and Young People's Plan 2009-15
  • Willingness to participate in developing professional guidelines and standards
  • Proficient IT skills, including email use
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including with children and young people
  • Ability to present information clearly and logically, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work contracted hours
  • Health promotion course and experience delivering training to school staff on managing children with health conditions
