Job summary

Marchant Recruitment is seeking a practical School Maintenance Technician for a Greenwich-based school in Southeast London. The role focuses on maintaining buildings, fixtures and grounds, carrying out minor repairs, routine checks and reporting faults to ensure safe, functional facilities for pupils and staff.

You will work with the premises team to prioritise tasks, follow health and safety procedures, and assist with planned maintenance while keeping tools and spaces tidy and secure.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in building maintenance, facilities support or a related trade.
• Practical knowledge of general repairs and maintenance.
• Confidence using hand tools and maintenance equipment safely.
• Ability to identify defects and determine when specialist assistance is needed.
• Understanding of health and safety requirements.
• Good organisation and time-management skills.
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to manage tasks and meet deadlines.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• A reliable, flexible and professional approach.
• Ability to work independently and use initiative.
• Willingness to complete safeguarding and background checks.

Responsibilities

• Carrying out general building maintenance and minor repairs.
• Inspecting doors, windows, locks, furniture for damage.
• Completing basic carpentry, painting and decorating tasks.
• Reporting faults that require specialist work.
• Supporting planned preventative maintenance activities.
• Responding to maintenance requests from staff.
• Assisting with furniture assembly, movement and room setup.
• Maintaining tools in safe working condition.
• Keeping maintenance areas clean and secure.
• Monitoring supplies and reporting when materials are low.
• Coordinating with external contractors and site access.
• Recording completed tasks and outstanding repairs.
• Following health and safety procedures and safe systems of work.
• Refer to specialists for electrical, gas, or other trades.
