Job summary

Heriot-Watt University invites applications for a Research Technologist in Satellite Communication Systems. This full-time fixed-term 17-month role offers Grade 7 salary and a base in the Microwave and Antenna Engineering Group.

The post focuses on developing compact user terminal antennas, RF front-ends, and digital baseband for satellite ground stations, with collaboration with industrial partners. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership in RF and embedded system development,

Qualifications

• PhD Degree or equivalent in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Physics or subject relevant to research activity.
• Good understanding of satellite communications and satellite user terminal technology.
• Practical experience applying programming for satellite communication systems.
• Experience in writing high quality academic papers and/or technical notes and reports.
• Effective communication, report preparation, time management to meet deadlines.
• Flexibility to travel for meetings.
• Must be prepared to work as part of a team.
• Ability to contribute to method improvement where required.

Responsibilities

• Review, design, implement and test microwave and optical modules and integrate them for satellite ground station.
• Undertake research into physical-layer wireless communication systems including novel antenna arrays and beamforming networks.
• Compile written reports and articles for publication and contract fulfillment.
• Present progress reports to the research group or external audiences.
• Attend national and international meetings as required.
• Write up results and contribute to research reports, publications and funding proposals.
• Read academic papers and attend training courses to stay updated.
• Carry out other duties designated by line manager.
