Job summary

Heriot-Watt University invites applications for a Research Technologist in Satellite Communication Systems. Based in Edinburgh, you will contribute to UKSA-funded projects, developing compact user terminals and RF front-ends, and integrating fully functional satellite receivers with digital systems.

You will publish results, collaborate with industrial partners, and manage milestones with strong project-management skills. A PhD and extensive satellite comms experience are essential.

Qualifications

• PhD degree or equivalent in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Physics or related field.
• Strong understanding of satellite communications and user terminal technology.
• Hands-on programming experience for satellite communication systems.
• Experience writing high-quality academic papers or technical notes.
• Excellent communication, reporting and time-management skills.
• Willingness to travel for meetings.

Responsibilities

• Review, design, implement and test microwave/optical modules for the satellite ground station.
• Research analysis of physical-layer wireless systems, including antennas and beamforming.
• Prepare reports, papers and proposals; contribute to publications.
• Present progress to group members and external audiences; disseminate findings.
• Attend national/international meetings and coordinate with partners.
• Write up results and contribute to funding proposals.
• Keep abreast of developments through literature and courses.
