Job summary

Mistral AI is seeking a Research Software Engineer for the Sandboxes team to design, build, and operate a platform that runs isolated environments for untrusted code at massive scale. You will work across Kubernetes clusters, contribute to low-level virtualization, and partner with researchers and ML engineers to turn their needs into platform features.

This is a software engineering role focusing on robust systems, performance, and security.

Qualifications

• Strong background in software engineering and distributed systems.
• Experience building and operating large-scale infrastructure.
• Fluency in Python or Rust; ability to write reliable systems code.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes and cluster operations, networking, or virtualization.
• Self-starter with quick learning and high ownership.
• Collaborative, low-ego team player in a small team.
• Nice-to-haves: Firecracker, ML workloads.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the sandboxing platform across Kubernetes clusters.
• Develop sandbox runtime leveraging Firecracker for fast startup and scheduling.
• Improve performance and latency to support millions of sandboxes.
• Write robust systems code in Rust and Python; review CI/CD and observability.
• Own cross-cluster networking, security boundaries, and isolation guarantees.
• Collaborate with researchers and ML engineers to turn needs into features.
