Job Description:

Brief Description: Lead investigations into serious accidents, incidents, environmental issues, and major performance loss events. Examine evidence to establish causes and make recommendations to improve health, safety, and environmental performance. Conduct assurance activities to ensure recommendations are implemented effectively.

About the role (External):

Key Accountabilities:

1. Act as the lead Investigator in serious investigations, delivering reports that meet professional standards, identify causes, and justify recommendations.
2. Develop relationships with route-based designated competent persons and investigators; provide advice and support to improve investigation processes and report quality.
3. Manage responses to comments and queries on investigation reports, ensuring appropriate evaluation.
4. Establish constructive relationships with external organisations, fostering respect for investigations led by Network Rail.
5. Coach local accident investigators and support the implementation of recommendations.
6. Review and evaluate reports and data to assess assurance process performance.
7. Produce reviews and reports on emerging trends, audits, and investigation findings to draw meaningful conclusions on safety and environmental systems.
8. Promote a culture of fairness in investigations.
9. Undertake safety assurance activities, including on-site verification, based on emerging trends or safety team directives.

Minimum Requirements:

• Membership of the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) at TechIOSH level or above.
• Detailed knowledge of investigation techniques and their application.
• Good knowledge of railway operations, engineering, safety, and environmental management.
• Good knowledge of health and safety legislation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Logical thinker with strong analytical and computer skills.
• Level 6 NEBOSH, Degree, or equivalent qualification.
• Good influencing skills.
• Knowledge of data analysis, trending, and insights.
