Job summary

Universal Quantum in the United Kingdom is seeking an RF – System Designer to join the Electronics Group to advance quantum technologies.

You will design and validate RF delivery systems, collaborate with electronics, ASIC, mechanical engineers and physicists, and push innovative RF solutions from concept to delivery. This role emphasizes hands-on testing, cross-functional teamwork and rapid PoC development.

Qualifications

  • 5–10 years of RF system or circuit design experience.
  • Strong understanding of RF hardware design principles.
  • Experience developing and executing RF test plans.
  • Knowledge of low noise design techniques and testing of low noise RF systems.
  • Proven success bringing RF subsystems to market.
  • Proficiency with HFSS, CST and ADS.
  • Experience working with suppliers/contractors.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team collaboration.
  • Minimum 2.1 BEng/BSc in System or Electronics Engineering or a related field.

  • Define specifications and trade-offs for key RF building blocks.

What You’ll Accomplish
  • Contribute to the design and architecture activities for a custom RF delivery system including cables and transmission lines.
  • Define specifications and trade-offs for key building blocks of the end-to-end RF delivery system
  • Oversee all RF aspects of design, simulation, integration, verification, and validation testing.
  • Expand your expertise across various engineering domains.
  • Collaborate with RF team members, electronics engineers, ASIC/chip designers, mechanical engineers, software engineers, and physicists to achieve common goals.
  • Ensure the use of innovative RF solutions.
  • Assist in project planning, scheduling, risk management and progress reporting.
  • Contribute to rapid proof-of-concept developments and feasibility discussions.
The 3 Most Critical Attributes We’ll Use to Compare Candidates:
  1. Extensive RF front and backend system design experience (VHF to X-band).
  1. Proven hands‑on experience in designing complex RF systems from concept to delivery, including proficiency with FEA tools, particularly Ansys HFSS, CST and ADS.
  1. Inquisitive, co-operative, empathetic and has a strong desire to work within a highly technical environment.
Must-have Skills:
  • Around 5-10 years of practical experience in RF System and/or circuit design.
  • Strong understanding of RF hardware design principles.
  • Expertise in developing and executing test plans for complex RF systems.
  • Knowledge of low noise design techniques and testing low noise RF systems.
  • Demonstrated success in bringing RF subsystem designs to market.
  • Proficiency with FEA and simulation tools, especially Ansys HFSS, CST and ADS.
  • Experience working with suppliers and contractors.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a team player.
  • A minimum of a 2.1 BEng/BSc Degree in System or Electronics Engineering or a related field.
Nice-to-have Skills:
  • Experience in analogue design.
  • PCB design experience (VHF to X-band).
  • Familiarity with the RF vendor supply chain.
  • Pragmatic approach to decision-making and design choices.
  • Experience in team and/or project management.
