Job summary

Middlesbrough Council is seeking a Revenues and Benefits Technical Support Officer within the Resident and Business Support service. The role combines technical advisory work with frontline service delivery to residents and businesses.

You will handle high-level enquiries, support enforcement actions, provide expert guidance, deliver training, and drive service improvements in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Significant experience within a Revenues and Benefits environment (Council Tax, Business Rates or Welfare Benefits is essential).
• Strong technical knowledge or the ability to quickly develop expertise.
• Excellent communication skills and confidence dealing with complex cases.
• A proactive, solutions-focused approach.
• The ability to support change and contribute to service development.

Responsibilities

• Managing and responding to high-level enquiries such as complaints, Freedom of Information requests, Subject Access Requests and Councillor enquiries.
• Handling appeals and representing the Council at tribunals.
• Supporting enforcement activity, including attending court and progressing legal actions such as bankruptcy, charging orders and winding-up proceedings.
• Providing expert technical advice across Resident and Business Support services.
• Delivering training and developing structured learning programmes, including inductions for new colleagues.
• Supporting quality assurance processes to maintain high service standards.
• Identifying opportunities for innovation, efficiency and service improvement.
