Job summary

Smartedge Solutions Ltd in Birmingham is seeking a technical leader to architect, design, implement, test and deliver retail POS solutions, modernising legacy platforms into scalable, containerised microservices.

You will work with business stakeholders and engineering teams to translate requirements into robust POS systems, lead NCR Voyix and Emerald POS initiatives, and drive automation, test frameworks, AI-driven quality engineering, and reliable device integration across SCO and peripherals.

Qualifications

• Proven experience with NCR Voyix and/or Emerald POS platforms.
• Experience in retail POS implementation, modernisation, testing and support.
• Strong knowledge of Self-Checkout (SCO) and retail checkout technologies.
• Hands-on experience integrating POS peripherals (scanners, printers, scales, payment devices).
• Experience developing and maintaining test automation frameworks and Selenium Grid.
• Knowledge of Cucumber BDD and behaviour-driven development.

Responsibilities

• Oversee integration of POS peripherals (scanners, printers, scales, payment devices).
• Provide Store Controller device management, hardware abstraction and POS integration.
• Design and maintain scalable test automation frameworks to improve coverage and delivery.
• Lead automation initiatives using Selenium Grid and Cucumber BDD.
• Explore AI-driven quality engineering, intelligent test automation and emulators.
• Promote SonarQube and code quality; drive continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with platform, security, and operations for reliable deployments.
• Act as escalation point for complex POS and checkout issues.
• Provide mentoring and coaching across cross-functional teams.
• Drive continuous improvement across POS transformation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership for the architecture, design, implementation, testing, and delivery of retail POS solutions.
• Lead the modernisation of Legacy POS platforms into scalable, containerised, microservices-based solutions.
• Work with business stakeholders, solution architects, vendors, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into robust and future-ready POS solutions.
• Lead and support NCR Voyix and Emerald POS implementation, modernisation, testing, and support activities.
• Provide technical expertise across Self-Checkout (SCO) and retail checkout technologies.
• Oversee integration and management of POS peripherals, including:
  • Barcode scanners
  • Printers
  • Scales
  • Payment terminals/devices
  • Other in-store hardware
• Provide expertise in Store Controller operations, device management, hardware abstraction, and POS device integration.
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable test automation frameworks to improve test coverage, quality, and delivery efficiency.
• Lead automation initiatives using technologies such as Selenium Grid and Cucumber BDD.
• Explore and implement AI-driven quality engineering, intelligent test automation, emulators, and robotic validation solutions.
• Apply POS emulation, device virtualisation, and hardware abstraction layer concepts to support efficient testing and validation.
• Promote code quality and continuous improvement practices using tools such as SonarQube.
• Collaborate with platform, infrastructure, security, and operations teams to ensure reliable deployments and operational readiness.
• Act as the technical escalation point for complex POS and checkout-related issues.
• Provide technical coaching, mentoring, and guidance to cross-functional engineering and project teams.
• Drive continuous improvement, innovation, and engineering best practices across POS transformation initiatives.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Strong experience with NCR Voyix and/or Emerald POS platforms.
• Proven experience in retail POS implementation, modernisation, testing, and support.
• Strong understanding of Self-Checkout (SCO) and retail checkout technologies.
• Experience working with Store Controllers and POS device management.
• Hands-on experience integrating retail POS peripherals such as scanners, printers, scales, and payment devices.
• Strong experience developing and maintaining test automation frameworks.
• Hands-on experience with Selenium Grid.
• Strong knowledge of Cucumber BDD/Behaviour-Driven Development.
• Experience with POS emulation, hardware abstraction layers, device virtualisation, or retail systems testing.
• Experience with code quality and continuous improvement tools such as SonarQube.
• Understanding of modern application architectures, including microservices and containerised platforms.
• Experience providing technical leadership across complex retail technology or POS transformation programmes.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with business, technical, infrastructure, security, operations, and vendor teams.

Desirable Skills & Experience

• Knowledge of PCI-DSS and payment industry standards.
• Experience with retail fuel/petrol forecourt systems.
• Experience with performance testing tools such as JMeter or LoadRunner.
• Experience with AI-driven quality engineering and intelligent test automation.
• Experience working with cloud, containerisation, or platform engineering technologies.
• Experience within large-scale supermarket, grocery, convenience, or retail environments.
