Job summary

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for a Trust Doctor in Vascular Surgery. The post supports a 1:6 non-resident vascular on-call with regular theatre exposure and opportunities for audit, research and teaching.

Initial fixed-term for 12 months with a focus on developing skills towards CESR pathways, based in a major arterial centre in the region. The post requires full GMC registration, MRCS or equivalent, and experience in vascular surgery at ST3+ level

Resident Doctor- Vascular Surgery

Applications are invited for the post of Trust Doctor in VascularSurgery (SpR equivalent).

We are a dynamic, motivated and forward thinking unit in a largeacute hospital, and one of three tertiary vascular centres in the north east. Thispost would suit both experienced junior trainees (senior SHO/core trainees) whowish to obtain further experience, prior to appointment on a higher surgicaltraining programme or those pursuing the CESR pathway wishing to furtherdevelop their skills and knowledge.

The successful applicant will cover a 1:6 non-resident vascularon-call whilst having regular scheduled theatre opportunities in either oursurgeon led hybrid vascular theatre or non-hybrid theatre along with regularexposure to a variety of emergency cases. With 2 operating lists a day, ourscope of practice covers the breadth of vascular surgery offering our patientpopulation treatments for aortic aneurysms (both open and endovascular),carotid disease, peripheral arterial disease, renal access and complex venouswork.

Activeparticipation is expected in the departmental meetings, rota management anddepartmental junior doctor teaching programmes.The successfulapplicant will be guided in their development by an Educational and ClinicalSupervisor, and will have access to a range of educational opportunities bothformal and ad hoc along with the opportunity undertake audit, research and QIprojects.

Main duties of the job

Deliverhigh quality patient care to inpatient wards, outpatient clinics and in thetheatre environment. We expect the successful applicant to be able tocompetently undertake the following duties (not exhaustive);

• Leadward rounds, make and enact management plans for inpatients within the boundsof their competence and experience whilst escalating appropriately to therelevant consultant as required.
• Clearand compassionate communication with patients and families.
• Preparationof patients for theatre and post-operative care
• Assistingin theatre and post-operative care.
• Undertakecertain surgical operations and procedures independently (commensurate withlevel of clinical experience).
• Managingthe unselected emergency take and dealing with both routine and emergencyadmissions.
• Comprehensivepatient handover with written and verbal communication as appropriate for allvascular and referred inpatients.
• Helpdevelop new services where needed.
• ClinicalSupport of more junior members of the vascular team and Specialist VascularNurses.
• Beexpected to take an active part in continuing medical education andundergraduate teaching.
• Fullengagement with Clinical Audit and Clinic Governance is required.
• Attendanceand presentation in the vascular MDT.
• Activeparticipation in research and quality improvement projects.
• Participationand co-ordination of the monthly morbidity and mortality meetings.
• Attendanceat selected outpatient clinics.

Job responsibilities

STSFT is seeking a motivated individual tojoin the team from as a Trust Doctor working at Registrar level at this majorArterial Centre. The post holder will have experience equivalent to thatof ST3-6 trainee who wishes to train further in a broad range of vascular andendovascular surgery.

The Unit specialises insurgeon-led/delivered endovascular (percutaneous & hybrid) care, aorticsurgery, carotid endarterectomy, lower limb reconstruction and complex venouswork. Active participation is expected in the departmentalmeetings, rota management and departmental junior doctor teachingprogrammes. Clinical audit projects are actively encouraged in thedepartment, whilst participation in clinical governance and morbidity &mortality meetings is mandatory.

The successful applicant will participatein an on-call rota (1:6) which supports the vascular service exclusively. Therewill be no on-call commitment to General Surgery. This post represents anexcellent opportunity for a junior surgical trainee to gain experience in alarge acute hospital with contemporary tertiary vascular emergency and electivepractice. This post will be based predominantly at Sunderland RoyalHospital vascular hub, although provision of some clinic and day-case activitymay be required at South Tyneside Hospital, Bishop Auckland Hospital,University Hospital of North Durham and Durham Treatment Centre.

This post is not recognised for trainingpurposes by the Postgraduate Deanery.
