The main responsibilities will include providing senior skilled nursing care to ensure the safe and efficient running of research studies within the designated facility. Responsibilities include ensuring research has full approval to proceed; screening, recruiting participants, collecting and entering data. The appointee will also identify barriers to recruitment and overcome these. The role requires developing and maintaining clinical skills and competencies, including venipuncture, cannulation, IV, oral drug administration, spirometry, small airways testing, bronchial provocation testing, blood sample analysis, vital signs measurement, Basic Life Support, and other advanced skills as required for specific studies.
The post-holder will be allocated to a specific research clinical area. Travel across UHL's three sites (Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital, and Glenfield Hospital) will be required, and they may work in other research services. Opportunities for developing expertise in other research specialties will be available. The role may involve shift patterns, including internal rotation onto night duty to ensure 24-hour coverage (including bank holidays).
The post involves developing and maintaining constructive working relationships with multi-professional teams within the specialty. The post-holder will be responsible for ensuring good communication between all service providers within the specialty. Participation in local and national networking groups to develop expertise and cascade learning back to the team is expected. The post-holder will manage a personal caseload of clinical trials and patients independently with minimal supervision or mentoring from Principal Investigators, senior research nurses, or team leaders.
Providing highly specialist nursing management for an individual client caseload, delivering care in various settings such as outpatient clinics, hospital wards, and over the telephone. Supporting the Lead Investigator in delivering the funded study protocol and managing the associated budget. Ensuring all work aligns with the research protocol, ICH-GCP, and Research Governance guidelines. Acting as a primary contact for clinical trials patients. Educating other staff about the responsibilities of the research nurse role and disseminating information on specific studies.
