Job description

Research Fellow in Bioelectronics and Medical Robotics

We are seeking motivated postdoctoral scholars with a passion for flexible bioelectronics and medical robotics to join our dynamic research team. This project focuses on developing a smart bioelectronic system that seamlessly integrates therapeutic functions with continuous monitoring capabilities. The system incorporates cutting-edge technologies in bioelectronics, soft robotics, and materials science, leveraging advanced materials and fabrication technologies. If you are excited about groundbreaking research and innovative technology in healthcare engineering, this opportunity is perfect for you.

As a member of the Multiscale Intelligent Biodevices Lab (MIB), led by Dr. Rujie Sun at the University of Southampton, you will lead efforts to develop innovative bioelectronic systems that integrate real-time monitoring and therapeutic functions. Your primary focus will be designing and fabricating flexible bioelectronics that can interface seamlessly with biological tissues, combining soft robotic techniques to enhance personalized treatment. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on interdisciplinary projects, pushing the frontiers of personalized medicine and health management. In this project, you will collaborate with Inha University and have access to a broad network of academic partners, including Imperial College London, University of Oxford, University of Bristol, and University of Liverpool. Additionally, we work closely with industrial and clinical collaborators, providing opportunities for fostering new partnerships and expanding your professional network.

The successful applicant should have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Education: PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related disciplines with a strong academic record (or working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD).
  • Research Interests: Demonstrated enthusiasm for research in flexible bioelectronics, soft medical robotics, or related fields.
  • Skills: Extensive experience in microfabrication techniques for bioelectronics or soft robotics, as well as expertise in biomaterials for medical tools. Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and excellent communication skills.

The University of Southampton is a global leader in research and innovation, among the top 1% of universities globally. Our electronic engineering programme was rated the best in the UK by the 2022 Guardian University Guide, and we were ranked 4th nationally for engineering in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF). By joining us, you will be part of a supportive and vibrant academic community, with access to cutting-edge facilities and world-class research opportunities. This is an ideal environment for advancing your career while making significant contributions to the future of technology.

The post is full-time and will be available until 31/07/2026, with the possibility of further extension.

If you are interested, please submit your CV and a cover letter detailing how your skills and experience align with this role. For further inquiries, contact Dr. Rujie Sun at rujie.sun@soton.ac.uk.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD. The title of Research Fellow will be awarded upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to qualification, the position will be titled Senior Research Assistant.

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment that fosters respect and equality of opportunity. We support our staff and students with a generous holiday allowance and flexible working arrangements.

Apply by 11.59 pm GMT on the closing date. For assistance, contact Recruitment at +44(0)2380 592750 or recruitment@soton.ac.uk, quoting the job number.
