Job summary

The University of Sheffield is seeking a highly qualified researcher to develop solid-state processing routes from waste streams and feedstock for wire additive manufacturing, focusing on high-integrity materials. You will work within the STAR group to maximise circularity in engineering sectors.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent qualification in science or engineering is essential (Application).
  • Broad knowledge of Advanced Materials research and thermomechanical processing is essential (Application).
  • Experience in multiscale materials modelling is essential (Application).
  • Experience in solid-state powder processing and hot forging is desirable (Application).
  • Experience interpreting flow stress and field-assisted sintering data is essential (Application).
  • High level of competency in electron microscopy (SEM, EBSD, TEM) is essential (Application).
  • Experience in non-destructive evaluation and mechanical testing methods is desirable (Interview).
  • Ability to plan, organise and execute to deliver project outcomes is essential (Interview).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of leadership within a team (Interview).
  • Self-motivation and teamwork abilities are essential (Interview).

Responsibilities

  • Write a literature review and supporting documents for the Research team; prepare reports.
  • Plan research effectively and report to the supervisory team.
  • Coordinate with industrial project members and collaborators.
  • Monitor results daily and adapt plans for new developments.
  • Carry research using field-assisted sintering and continuous extrusion technologies.
  • Undertake finite element modelling of thermomechanical processes.
  • Characterise microstructure using SEM, EBSD and TEM techniques.
  • Utilise finite element and multi-physics modelling software to support deliverables.
  • Carry out additional duties commensurate with the post.
