Job summary

The University of Sheffield is seeking a highly skilled researcher to contribute to an EPSRC project on recycling aerospace waste using field-assisted sintering and extrusion, focusing on solid-state processing and materials characterisation.

You will work on multiscale materials modelling, interpret flow-stress data, and utilise EBSD/TEM techniques, with opportunities for leadership and collaboration across academia and industry.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent qualification in science or engineering.
  • Strong scientific/engineering background with Advanced Materials research, thermomechanical processing.
  • Experience in multiscale materials modelling.
  • Experience with titanium and steel processing in an industrial environment.
  • Experience interpreting flow stress and field-assisted sintering data.
  • High level of competency in electron microscopy (SEM, EBSD and TEM).
  • Experience in non-destructive evaluation and mechanical testing methods.
  • Ability to plan, organise and deliver to the project plan.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; able to handle scientific and commercial issues.
  • Self-motivation and capability to be a team player as well as team leader.

Responsibilities

  • Write literature reviews and supporting documents for the Research team.
  • Plan research effectively and report to the supervisory team.
  • Coordinate with industrial members of the project team and industry collaborators.
  • Carry out research using field-assisted sintering and continuous extrusion technologies.
  • Undertake finite element modelling of thermomechanical processes.
  • Characterise the microstructure of material using standard metallographic preparation, EBSD and TEM techniques.
