AXIS Renewable Energy Engineering Intern
Global Energy
UK Remote / hybrid

The AXIS Renewable Energy Engineering team, as part of AXIS Global Energy, require a highly motivated Engineering Intern to support a project which aims to identify trends in damages and failures within onshore wind farms, solar PV and battery storage (BESS) assets. The role involves reviewing project information and root cause analyses from legacy insurance claims paid by AXIS and compiling key information in a database to assist our underwriting decisions, and the insights we can provide to industry.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about the core workings and failure modes of grid scale renewable technology in multiple countries and landscapes, to capture lessons learned for AXIS, a lead insurer of renewable energy globally.

How does this role contribute to our collective success?

The output of the project will directly impact business insights and decision making of AXIS Global Energy. The trends and individual claim summaries will be used by the engineering team directly to support AXIS underwriters when evaluating future renewable energy projects they have been asked to provide terms and pricing for. By identifying patterns in the root causes of claims, we can take a more informed underwriting approach and ask additional questions to avoid a repeat situation in future.

The high-level outputs of the project shall also be used for AXIS thought leadership pieces. The broader aim of the project is to inform and drive best practice into the manufacturing, development, construction and operations of renewable energy projects globally by learning the lessons of the past for all stakeholders.

What will you do in this role?

Your primary role will involve reading final loss adjuster reports submitted for each claim and extracting key technical and financial information. These are stored in a central Excel database which can be accessed by AXIS Global Energy. The reports may contain detailed root cause analyses and expert investigations on the loss event, as well as the expected costs relating to both the physical damage and any business interruption associated with it.

You will use your engineering knowledge and judgement to determine the types and causes of loss from a technical standpoint and carefully add the pertinent information into our database with a well-rounded summary. The claims you will need to process will be from wind farms, solar PV, battery energy storage, large scale hydro and power to X systems such as green hydrogen. As part of this, regular quality control exercises on existing entries in the database may be required.

You will also support the beta testing of an AI tool to support lifting key information from reports and may be involved in the development of this tool, depending on your experience, and may also be required to take on additional duties, responsibilities and activities appropriate to the nature of this role.

About You:
