Job summary

Renal Dialysis Unit Team Leader

The post holder has responsibility for the daily management of the departmentwhich involves coordinating patient care, timely and appropriate interventions anddeployment of staff to provide a high standard of nursing care to all RDU patients.o Has continuing first line management responsibility for a team of nursing andsupport staff managing sickness and absence and ensuring team members haveidentified development needs and a development plan.o The post holder will also provide a clinical nursing service, demonstrating throughpractice, the desired model of care for all grades of nursing staff. As a seniorclinical nurse, the team leader is responsible for the assessment of care needs,the development, implementation and evaluation of family centred programmes ofcare and is accountable for the quality of care delivered within the departmentenvironment by the department nursing team.o Works collaboratively and co-operatively with the Matron and Head of Nursingto develop services and takes responsibility for implementing the nursing strategyfor RDU.o Takes responsibility for co-ordinating and ensuring timely responses to clinicalincidents and complaint

Main duties of the job
  • Act as a role model and support for junior staff and act as a senior resource for expert clinical advice when dealing with issues such as child protection concerns, deteriorating patient.
  • Continually monitor standards of care and lead the improvement of care. Be responsible for benchmarking, audit and research within the department and encourage a culture of shared governance.
  • Promote and maintain a culture of patient and staff incident reporting in accordance with Trust Guidelines.
  • Be responsible for planning and implementing care and act in a supervisory role to junior staff. Develop and implement standards of care and practice within the department and ensure they are maintained and monitored consistently.
  • Maximise best use of clinical resources, monitor and evaluate patient flow, admission and discharge arrangements, take responsibility for initiating improvements
  • Be responsible for effective communication within team and department, disseminate team brief and other relevant information
  • Liaise with multidisciplinary teams regarding the care of patients, participate in case conferences as required and ensure effective communication when dealing with child protection concerns.

Person Specification
Education and Training
  • oRegistered Nurse (Child)
  • oSound clinical knowledge
  • oMentorship in Practice or equivalent
  • PLS
  • Leadership Qualification or equivalent experience.
Experience of
  • oSignificant experience in a renal department/ acute paediatric setting with experience at Band 6 or above.
  • oEvidence of managing and coordinating a shift (Nurse in charge)
  • oEvidence of further professional development / expanded roles relevant to paediatric emergency care or acute setting.
  • oExperience of HR management/ issues
  • oExperience of resource management and able to manage resources effectively
  • Renal course
Knowledge of
  • oKnowledge of Professional, Departmental and NHS issues
  • oKnowledge of Trust and Corporate plans and agenda
  • oExperience of managing change, including participation in service development projects
  • oAwareness and understanding of confidentiality
Skills
  • oAble to communicate with all grades of staff and across the MDT and evidence of assertiveness, negotiating and organisational skills.
  • oProven clinical expertise
  • oAble to work on own initiative, lead and motivate the team
  • oExcellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal especially in difficult and stressful situations.

  • oProven leadership skills and experience of managing a team and/or evidence of management/supervisor training.
