Job summary

Xero UK is seeking a Lead Engineer to guide a cross-functional team in delivering scalable software. You will mentor engineers, set technical direction, and improve development practices while tackling architectural challenges in a remote/hybrid setup.

You will design secure, scalable distributed systems using Node.js and AWS, drive incident response readiness, and promote a culture of collaboration and continuous learning across the team.

Qualifications

• Expertise in designing secure, scalable distributed systems and managing software at scale with proficiency in our core tech stack: Node.js, AWS.
• Experience in coaching and mentoring engineers to grow technical capabilities.
• Strong communication skills to navigate complex technical ideas and build alignment.
• Growth mindset with a passion for continuous learning, experimentation and sharing knowledge.
• Ability to lead incident responses, resolve failure patterns, and guide quality testing strategies.
• Collaborative approach to problem solving and encouraging a healthy team culture.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor engineers; set direction and improve how the team works across design, delivery, deployment and support.
• Help the team deliver well, build smaller, safer changes, strengthen operational visibility and reduce dependency on a few people.
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners to align technical designs with architectural standards.
• Design and evolve secure, scalable distributed systems for the product group.
