Job summary

Cats Protection is seeking a Rehoming and Welfare Assistant for our Ferndown centre in Dorset. This 28-hour role across four days includes one weekend day and bank holidays when required, with a salary up to £19,154.40 per year. You’ll help with cat care, cleaning, customer service and supporting adoption activities.

Our team relies on empathy, clear communication and teamwork. A full manual driving licence is essential for occasional vehicle movements and veterinary runs.

Qualifications

  • Full manual driving licence required.
  • Excellent communicator with strong empathy.
  • Experience in customer service and dealing with the public.
  • Experience in animal welfare and cat care.
  • Ability to cope with distressing situations and work as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Clean cat pens and litter trays across centre sections.
  • Feed and care for cats, including medical or behavioural needs; handling as required.
  • Present a professional, friendly image to customers and visitors.
  • Assist with veterinary runs; may drive the Cats Protection vehicle off-site.
  • Work with volunteers to coach and guide them on cat care duties.
  • Support scheduling and preparation of rehoming information, viewings and adoptions.

Job description

Team: Centre

Location: Ferndown, Dorset

Work pattern: 28 hours per week across 4 days, to include 1 weekend day and bank holidays when required

Salary: Up to £19,154.40 per year

Contract: Permanent

Responsibilities of our Rehoming and Welfare Assistant:

  • Carry out cleaning of cat pens, including litter trays, in the various sections of the centre
  • Feed and care for cats requiring additional medical or behavioural treatment as required. This also includes handling
  • Present a professional and friendly image to customers and visitors
  • As required, assist with veterinary runs, this may include driving the Cats Protection vehicle off-site
  • Work with volunteers to coach and guide them on cat care duties
  • Support with the scheduling and preparation of rehoming information, viewings and adoption of cats in care

What we’re looking for in our Rehoming and Welfare Assistant:

  • A full, manual driving license is essential as some driving of centre vans is required
  • An excellent communicator with strong empathy
  • Excellent customer service skills and experience of dealing with members of the public
  • Experience of animal welfare, including feeding, cleaning, medicating and handling and a high level of understanding of how to meet welfare needs of cats
  • Resilient with the ability to cope with potentially distressing and emotional situations
  • A positive attitude and good at working as part of a team
  • An understanding of health and safety and comfortable with manual handling tasks
