Job summary

3D Personnel Ltd is seeking a Head of Design to lead the regional design management function for a premier Tier 1 main contractor in the South Coast region. The role covers defence, education, healthcare, commercial and public sectors from tender through to delivery.

You will provide strategic direction, manage Design Managers and external consultants, drive BIM and digital construction initiatives, and ensure buildability and regulatory compliance across multiple projects.

Qualifications

• Extensive design management experience within a Tier 1 or established UK main contractor.
• Senior leadership experience (Head of Design / Regional Design Manager / Senior Design Manager).
• Strong track record managing design across multiple major construction projects.
• Understanding of RIBA stages, single-stage and two-stage procurement and Design & Build contracts.
• Knowledge of Building Regulations, CDM, design risk management and statutory requirements.
• Experience mentoring design management teams.
• Strong commercial awareness balancing design quality, programme and financial objectives.
• Relevant architectural, engineering or construction qualification; professional membership (CIOB/RIBA).

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and management of the regional design function across multiple projects.
• Lead and develop a team of Design Managers and Senior Design Managers.
• Oversee design management through the full project lifecycle from bid to handover.
• Establish regional design strategies, procedures and best practices.
• Support tender submissions, feasibility, risk assessments and value engineering.
• Oversee external design consultants and subcontractors.
• Ensure design programmes and information release align with procurement and construction objectives.
• Provide senior technical leadership on complex design issues and regulatory requirements.
• Champion BIM, digital construction, sustainability and modern methods of construction.
• Maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, supply chain and stakeholders.
