Job summary

Sense Education is seeking a Reception Teaching Assistant for a welcoming Carlisle primary school to provide 1:1 support for a child with Autism, under guidance from the Teacher. You will work with KS2 level activities, focusing on emotional regulation, routine support, and building trust to help the pupil feel safe and ready to learn.

The role starts ASAP and is full-time, with potential temp–perm progression.

Qualifications

• A recognised Teaching Assistant qualification or a background in education or care (NVQ, CACHE, Degree, or equivalent).
• Experience supporting children with SEND.
• Passionate working with young children or adults with disabilities.

Reception Teaching Assistant

A welcoming primary school is seeking a compassionate Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a child who has Autism. This role is about building trust, offering consistency, and helping the pupil feel safe and ready to learn. You will be working at a KS2 level with guidance from the Teacher. This role is to start ASAP

The Role

You will work closely with the class teacher to support both learning and wellbeing, using patience, empathy, and creativity to nurture confidence and resilience. The focus will be on emotional regulation, encouragement, and gentle guidance through daily routines.

The Ideal Person

Applicants should hold a relevant degree or a recognised Teaching Assistant qualification. Experience with trauma-informed approaches is highly beneficial. What matters most is your ability to connect with children, remain calm under pressure, and bring a caring, reliable presence.

Pay Rate:£14.60 – £16.90 per hour

Hours8.30am–3.30pm, Monday to Friday. Term time

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. Thisadvertis for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
