Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is seeking a Software Engineer to support and enhance real-time fusion control software for complex research environments. You will develop full stack tooling spanning system engineering requirements to hardware-in-the-loop testing, ensuring reliable and high‑performing systems.

You'll lead architecture for key STEP projects and act as a technical advisor across initiatives using NI tools, FPGA design, and AI/ML approaches.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Computing, Numerical Science or a related discipline.
  • Experience developing software-based control and data acquisition systems.
  • Strong software engineering knowledge and experience applying best practices.
  • Experience developing in C/C++ and Python within Linux environments; knowledge of Rust/Julia advantageous.
  • Experience with real-time programming and distributed control systems.
  • Deep experience of Linux operating system.
  • Interest in control theory and embedded systems engineering.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet networks and TCP/IP/UDP and related protocols (SCPI, Modbus, EtherCAT, OPC UA, PTP).
  • Familiarity with LabVIEW, MATLAB, Simulink; developing and supporting HMIs for control rooms.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain and support real-time fusion control software systems.
  • Deliver practical AI/ML solutions with scientists to translate results into engineering solutions.
  • Develop PC/Linux-based control, data acquisition and HMI applications.
  • Contribute operations tools for MAST Upgrade, STEP and other fusion programmes.
  • Lead software architecture and technical delivery for UKAEA projects in instrumentation and control.
  • Support development of CODAC functionality and advanced control systems.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers and stakeholders to deliver robust software solutions.
  • Champion software engineering best practices and technical excellence.
  • Coordinate the use of National Instruments tools across UKAEA.
