Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority in Culham is seeking an experienced engineer to lead and direction the engineering team at the Materials Research Facility (MRF). You will oversee development of innovative solutions and integration of complex research equipment for remote handling and robotic systems, shaping the future of fusion and fission research.

You will partner with leadership to approve designs within UKAEA governance, deliver bespoke systems, and ensure safe, reliable experimental

Qualifications

  • Degree-qualified in an engineering discipline.
  • Strong systems engineering expertise to lead and integrate cross-disciplinary design tasks.
  • Experience with CE/UKCA certification requirements, ideally including machine certification.
  • Proven leadership with ability to motivate and develop a collaborative engineering team.
  • Strong project management skills, including resource planning and risk awareness.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Adaptable and resilient with changing priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering capability and delivery of active materials equipment within the MRF.
  • Deliver innovative, high-impact engineering solutions for safe preparation and research of active materials.
  • Lead engineering support for UKAEA programmes including major fusion and technology projects.
  • Engage stakeholders and report progress, risks, and opportunities to leadership and partners.
  • Drive asset management and value through planning, performance reporting, and governance.
  • Maintain high standards of engineering integrity, safety and technical judgement.
  • Lead and inspire a high-performing team to expand capability for world-leading irradiation research.
