Job summary

Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated cleaner to deliver general environmental cleaning on wards, including cleaning toilets, bathrooms, showers and sanitary areas, and daily/weekly cleaning of patient equipment.

The role involves maintaining hand hygiene supplies, waste handling, dish/meal service tasks where applicable, and following NHS cleaning standards; standard pattern Monday to Friday 16:00-18:30, 12.5 hours per week with training and benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure delivery of general environmental cleaning on wards including toilets, bathrooms, showers and sanitary areas, and daily/weekly cleaning of patient equipment.
  • Complete daily cleaning of bays, nurses stations and side rooms according to the allocated work schedule.
  • Carry out cleaning in accordance with National Specification for Cleanliness in the NHS PAS 5748 and Trust policies.
  • Terminally clean bed spaces and side rooms as required; replenish hand hygiene supplies.
  • Empty/relaline waste bins with appropriate coloured liners and manage clinical/non-clinical waste in line with regulations.
  • Clean internal glass/mirrors, vacuum carpeted areas and mop hard floors to remove dust and grit.
  • Conduct patient meal service duties where applicable, including meal distribution and HACCP checks.
  • Assist with unloading of supplies, distribution to departments, and refer complaints as needed.
  • Provide mail delivery and exterior area cleaning tasks (bins, car park) and linen distribution and laundry duties.

Job description

The main elements of the role are ensuring the delivery of general environmental cleaning on the wards including responsibility for the cleaning of all sanitary areas such as toilets, bathrooms, showers and sluice rooms, and daily and weekly cleaning of patient equipment. Complete the daily cleaning of bays and side rooms, nurses station and other areas on a designated ward area as specified on the allocated daily work schedule. Ensure cleaning is carried out in accordance with National Specification for Cleanliness in the NHS (2021) PAS 5748 Cleanliness in Healthcare Facilities, the Trust Cleaning Policy, Patient Equipment Cleaning Policy and the agreed cleaning schedule. Terminally clean bed spaces & side rooms as required. Ensure that alcohol gel dispensers, hand soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and, where required, aprons and gloves are replenished as needed to maintain high standards of hand hygiene, infection prevention, and control, thereby reducing the risk of cross-infection between patients. Emptying, cleaning and relining waste bins with appropriate coloured liner. Securing and placing them for disposal to ensure regulations for clinical and non-clinical waste (including compacting) are adhered to. Cleaning of internal glass and mirrors as detailed on the daily work schedule. Vacuum clean all carpeted floor surfaces and to static and damp mop all hard floor surfaces to ensure all areas are free from dust, dirt and grit. Clean and dry sanitary areas including WCs, wash hand basins, baths, showers, sinks and sluices (if present in work area).

  • Collect and deliver mail
  • Complete duties associated with the cleanliness of the exterior area e.g. bins and car park roads
  • Deliver/replenish gas cylinders as required.
  • Distribute linen to wards and associated areas and other laundry duties as required, including the operation of washing machines and dryers and the treatment/disposal of dirty laundry.

Assist with the unloading of supplies and distribution to departments. Refer complaints to the Supervisor/nurse in charge.

Patient Meal Service (Only applicable at in-patient sites). This service provides meals to patients in the community sites, they offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. Carry out all routine cleaning duties at prescribed times and in compliance with specific ward/department policies and procedures at all times. Distribute and collect menu cards. Loading of regeneration trolleys and selection of correct heating cycle. Ensure patients receive the meals they have ordered, as approved by nursing staff, and to prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, evening meals, beverages, and snacks throughout the day in accordance with patient choice and dietary requirements. Place frozen meals in regeneration trolley and heat in accordance with procedures and guidance. Delivering and collection of meal trolleys Undertake and accurately record Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) food safety checks, including monitoring and recording refrigerator and freezer temperatures, ensuring compliance with food safety legislation, organisational policies, and infection prevention standards.
