Job description

Fortel is the largest Midlands based supplier of agency labour to the UK construction industry, providing contractors with pre-briefed, compliant teams formed of trusted and skilled workers for construction and key infrastructure projects.

Role Outline:

A Ganger is responsible for co-ordinating and supervising the work, ensuring that all work is carried out safely and to programme. This involves briefing to the team, carrying out checks on plant and equipment and ensuring permits are in place.

Operate and promote safe working within gang. Ensure all works are carried out in line with approved method statements and that they have been briefed to gang and understood. Discuss any changes or amendments to method statements with site supervisor

Key Responsibilities:

• 1. Site Supervision & Coordination

  Manage and coordinate daily site activities, ensuring work is carried out efficiently and in line with project plans.

  Supervise and lead a team of operatives, subcontractors, and laborers to achieve project milestones.

  Ensure all tasks are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

  Liaise with Site Managers, Engineers, and other key personnel to resolve any issues that arise.

  Provide guidance and technical expertise to workers on site, ensuring best practices are followed.

• 2. Health, Safety & Compliance

  Enforce health and safety regulations in compliance with site policies.

  Conduct regular safety briefings, toolbox talks, and risk assessments.

  Ensure workers adhere to proper use of PPE and comply with site-specific safety protocols.

  Identify potential hazards and take immediate corrective action to mitigate risks.

  Oversee site first aid provisions, ensuring a safe working environment for all staff.

• 3. Quality Control & Progress Monitoring

  Monitor work progress, ensuring compliance with project specifications, drawings, and safety standards.

  Conduct site inspections to verify that materials and workmanship meet required quality benchmarks.

  Work closely with engineers and surveyors to ensure accuracy in construction works.

  Maintain and update daily site reports, progress logs, and other necessary documentation.

• 4. Resource & Material Management

  Coordinate material deliveries, ensuring availability of supplies and equipment needed for daily tasks.

  Work with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure materials are procured and delivered on time.

  Oversee plant and equipment usage, ensuring maintenance and compliance with regulations.

• 5. Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  Serve as the primary point of contact between site operatives and senior management.

  Liaise with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure smooth project execution.

  Attend site meetings and provide progress updates to management and stakeholders.

  Maintain effective communication with all team members to address challenges and ensure seamless coordination.

Requirements & Qualifications:

• SMSTS or SSSTS Certification – Ability to manage and enforce health and safety regulations on site.
• CSCS Gold Card – Demonstrates a high level of skill and competency in construction supervision.
• Proven Experience – Minimum of 5+ years working in a supervisory or foreman role on construction projects.
• Strong Leadership Skills – Ability to manage and motivate site teams effectively.
• Technical Knowledge – Familiarity with construction drawings, blueprints, and engineering specifications.
• Organizational Skills – Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate records.
• Problem-Solving Abilities – Quick decision-making skills to resolve site-related challenges.
