Job summary

Pulford is a thriving Church of England, Voluntary Aided lower school in Leighton Buzzard. We seek a dedicated helper to support teaching and learning, building strong relationships with children, including those with SEND, in both indoor and outdoor settings.

The role requires GCSEs in Maths and English (C or above) and NVQ TA/Level 2 or equivalent, plus willingness to undertake safeguarding training and CPD opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Must have GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above or equivalent.
  • Hold NVQ TA/Level 2 or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience working with children, ideally in education.
  • Willing to undertake safeguarding training and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of lessons where the child is experiencing difficulties accessing the learning.
  • Work on a 1:1 basis with the child and maintain positive relationships.
  • Promote safety and wellbeing of children and contribute to safeguarding.
  • Develop effective behaviour management strategies in line with policy.

Job description

What skills and experience we're looking for

Essential – The Job holder must:

  • Have the ability to work in a way that promotes the safety and wellbeing of children
  • Be comfortable working on their own initiative and on a 1:1 basis with the child, including in an outside environment
  • Be capable of building relationships with children with Special Educational Needs
  • Be physically fit and willing to undergo training in line with the school’s positive handling policy
  • Have a positive interest in working with children and have empathy with young people facing barriers to their learning
  • Be able to build relationships at the child’s level and maintain this for the benefit of the child
  • Hold GCSE Grade ‘c’ or above, or equivalent qualification, in Maths and English
  • Hold relevant qualifications at a level equivalent to at least NVQ TA/Level 2
  • Be willing to work both indoors and in an outdoor environment
  • Have effective oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both in working relationship with young pupils and in forming effective professional relationships with a wide range of contacts
  • Possess good organisational and time management skills
  • Be able to think outside of the box to support the delivery of a lesson where the child is experiencing difficulties accessing the learning
  • Be able to remain patient and calm
  • Be willing to undertake specific training to support an individual child
  • Have proven experience of working with children (either paid or unpaid capacity) preferably in an education setting, ideally primary
  • Have an understanding / awareness of special educational needs and disabilities
  • Have a range of positive behaviour management techniques
  • Have a knowledge of attachment difficulties and SEMH
Preferred – The Job holder is likely to:
  • Have an understanding of relevant policies/codes of practice and awareness of relevant legislation
