Job summary

The Clancy Group in London is seeking a Mains Laying Team Leader to supervise outdoor delivery of clean water mains works under the Thames Water framework. You will lead a crew, plan daily activities, and ensure safety, quality and on‑time performance.

Ideal candidates will have NRSWA Supervisor accreditation and relevant plant tickets, with a strong focus on safe working practices and right‑first‑time delivery. A full UK driving licence is essential.

Qualifications

  • Must have led mains laying or utilities teams within a clean water environment.
  • Full, clean UK manual driving licence plus NRSWA Supervisor accreditation.
  • Experience with safety and quality on site and in line with standards.
  • Knowledge of water mains installation standards and safe working practices.

Responsibilities

  • Plan daily works, allocate tasks, and manage labour, plant, and materials.
  • Deliver pre-start briefings, toolbox talks, and daily risk assessments.
  • Ensure trench set-ups, methods, and reinstatement meet specs and quality.
  • Maintain compliance with health, safety, CDM, and Thames Water requirements.
  • Mentor and coach operatives to maintain high workmanship standards.
  • Check equipment and plant are fit for use and operated safely.
  • Liaise with supervisors, planners, engineers and stakeholders to support delivery.
  • Complete site documentation, timesheets and quality paperwork.
  • Identify delays, escalate issues, and implement timely solutions.

Job description

We’re looking to recruit a Mains Laying Team Leader to join us working on Thames Water framework, leading a team delivering clean water mains laying and renewal works. This is a hands‑on supervisory role for someone who enjoys working outdoors, leading from the front, and taking pride in safe, high‑quality delivery.

You’ll be responsible for coordinating daily activities, setting your team up for success, and ensuring works are delivered safely, on programme, and in line with Thames Water and Clancy standards.

Activities
  • Planning daily works, allocating tasks, and managing labour, plant, and materials
  • Delivering pre‑start briefings, toolbox talks, and daily risk assessments
  • Ensuring trench set‑ups, methods, and reinstatement meet specification and quality standards
  • Maintaining full compliance with health, safety, environmental, CDM, and Thames Water requirements

We would love to hear from you if…

You have proven experience leading mains laying or utilities teams within a clean water environment, with a strong understanding of water mains installation standards and safe working practices. You’ll be confident organising site activities, managing crews, and maintaining high levels of safety and quality on site.

A full, clean UK manual driving licence is essential, along with NRSWA Supervisor accreditation. Experience using CAT & Genny, strong health and safety awareness, and familiarity with underground services are required. Tickets such as CPCS/NPORS for relevant plant, CSCS, and other utilities safety qualifications are highly desirable.

You’ll be a positive, practical leader with good communication skills, comfortable working in all weather conditions, and motivated to develop your team while delivering right‑first‑time results.
