Job description

Chelmsford City Council has a fantastic strategic marketing job opportunity in a highly commercial environment. You’ll be working closely with our four leisure centres, focusing on health, wellbeing, fitness and sport to meet ambitious financial targets and community objectives. If you are looking to gain hands on experience to demonstrate your marketing skills within a fast-paced and challenging work environment, this could be the role for you!

The Marketing Officer is responsible for delivering impactful data-led and income generating campaigns. These aim to drive reach, engagement and conversions for memberships, courses and activities across all our leisure sites. We operate multiple campaigns simultaneously with tight deadlines and challenging targets. This means applicants will need to demonstrate success achieved in delivering measurable business-focused multi-channel marketing campaigns including organic and paid social media, e-newsletters, websites and online such as Google Ads. We’re looking for someone with excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience of tailoring to reach different audiences. An understanding and experience in business social media accounts, design, copywriting, SEO, usability and testing are also critical.

Applicants will need to be confident in filming events using different devices including mobile phones, interviewing people face-to-face and editing film footage using industry software. For this work, an understanding of GDPR and accessible design and content features is key. Data driven decision making is also an important part of the role, so applicants will need to be familiar with interpreting analytics (such as Meta Business Suite), segmentation strategies and assessing campaign effectiveness. This will mean producing reports and presentations to internal and external stakeholders.

The successful applicant will have a positive, proactive, and “can-do” attitude with behaviours that reflect both the council and leisure’s values. Applicants need to be a team player with experience working in a collaborative environment. Being proactive and taking initiative is key to ensure we continue to adapt to sales data, emerging fitness industry and digital marketing trends. The post holder also needs to be highly organised with attention to detail, capable of working on multiple projects running at the same time, and confident working to tight deadlines. The ability to work flexibly and being agile in how workload is tackled is very important. Some evening and weekend work will be required depending on planned events.

The role involves working between the Civic Centre and our four leisure centres (Riverside Leisure Centre, Chelmsford Sport & Athletics Centre, Dovedale Leisure Centre and South Woodham Ferrers Leisure Centre) as required. This means the ability to travel within and around the city is essential.

Interviews are currently scheduled for the week commencing 5 October 2026.

Please note should sufficient applications be received prior to the closing date, we may close the role for applications early.
