Job summary

Agricultural Recruitment Specialists are seeking an experienced Herdsperson to join a progressive dairy farming business in the United Kingdom. You’ll work in a hands-on role with cows, maintaining high welfare standards and taking responsibility for day-to-day herd management.

You’ll join an experienced team, participate in regular milking rota, including every other weekend, with 2-bedroom cottage accommodation provided.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with dairy cattle and confidence handling cows.
  • Good understanding of livestock care and animal welfare, recognizing when attention is needed.
  • Calm, patient and conscientious when working with livestock.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor cows and report health or welfare concerns.
  • Assist with calving and provide care around calving.
  • Manage dry cows and those needing extra attention.
  • Carrry out feeding, bedding and general livestock duties.
  • Undertake milking as part of the farm rota, including every other weekend.
  • Maintain high hygiene and welfare standards across housing and yards.
  • Assist with routine farm and livestock tasks as required.
  • Work with the wider farm team to run the operation safely and efficiently.
  • Support visitors and educational groups on site.

Job description

The Job:

We are recruiting an experienced Herdsperson to join a progressive dairy farming business. This is a hands on role suited to someone who enjoys working with cows and takes pride in maintaining high standards of animal welfare and livestock care. You will work as part of an experienced team while also being trusted to use your own initiative and take responsibility for day to day herd management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor cows and identify and report any health or welfare concerns
  • Assist with calving and provide appropriate care to cows around calving
  • Manage dry cows and animals requiring additional attention
  • Carry out feeding, bedding and general livestock duties
  • Undertake milking as part of the regular farm rota, including every other weekend
  • Maintain high standards of hygiene, cleanliness and animal welfare across housing, yards and working areas
  • Assist with routine farm and livestock tasks as required
  • Work closely with the wider farm team to ensure the operation runs safely and efficiently
  • Help maintain a positive and professional environment for regular visitors, including educational groups

The Candidate
  • Previous experience working with dairy cattle and confidence handling cows
  • Good understanding of livestock care and animal welfare, with the ability to recognise when a cow requires attention
  • Calm, patient and conscientious when working with livestock
  • Reliable, hardworking and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
  • Practical and willing to get involved in all aspects of farm work
  • Good communication skills and a friendly, confident approach when dealing with colleagues and visitors
  • Keen to learn and develop within a progressive dairy business
  • AI and foot trimming experience would be advantageous but is not essential
  • Full UK driving licence and right to work in the UK
Candidate Requirements

All applicants must hold a minimum of an NVQ Level 2, Scottish NVQ Level 2, or an equivalent qualification relevant to the role applied for. Candidates must also have the legal right to work in the UK or hold a valid visa permitting employment.

The Package
  • Salary £37,000 – £38,000 per annum DOE
  • 2-bedroom cottage accommodation provided
  • Regular weekend milking rota, including every other weekend
