Kingsgate Workshops Trust (KWT)

KWT is a provider of affordable studios and workshops for artists and craft makers. The Chair has a key role in managing the Board and in working closely with the Director.

What difference will you make?

All Trustees are expected to provide strategic and governance oversight of KWT by working with the other members of the Board to support the Chair and Director of KWT to ensure good governance and help plan and fulfil the strategic aims of the charity. Responsibilities include:

1. Supporting and advising the Executive team in their areas of expertise.
2. Being collectively responsible for the governance of the charity with the other board members, ensuring that KWT acts in accordance with its governing documents and applicable legislation.
3. Ensuring that KWT uses its resources exclusively to further its charitable objects.
4. Exercising control over the financial affairs of KWT and protecting its assets, ensuring that the charity is financially sustainable.
5. Carrying out their duties and making decisions at all times in the best interests of KWT.
6. Attending and contributing to Board Meetings.
7. Attending bi-annual Q&A sessions with the director and KWT's studio users.
8. Acting as an ambassador for KWT.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking an experienced trustee to become our Chair. You will ideally have senior-level experience of working within the charity or arts sectors. Knowledge of how artist studios or charity-managed large buildings are run would be particularly welcomed. The diversity of the Board continues as a priority and KWT welcomes applications from anyone not disqualified from serving as a charity Trustee.

What will you be doing?

As Chair of the Board of Trustees, you will provide strategic leadership and oversight for KWT as it seeks to fulfil its charitable objects, ensuring it operates in accordance with its governing document and meets its legal and regulatory obligations. Responsibilities include:

1. Acting with tact and diplomacy.
2. Listening and engaging effectively, fostering and promoting a collaborative environment.
3. Encouraging all participants to contribute, constructively challenge, express diverse views, and develop consensus during Board meetings.
4. Bringing an external, independent perspective to the Board and leading on strategy development.
5. Motivating the staff team and providing support, and where appropriate challenge, to the Director.
6. Working with all KWT’s internal and external stakeholders to strengthen relationships and help KWT grow.
7. Having a good understanding of charity governance, financial matters, and the pressures on a small organisation managing a large building with many studio-holders.
8. Ensuring that the Board of Trustees is regularly refreshed, diverse, and incorporates the right balance of skills, knowledge, and experience needed to govern and lead the Trust effectively.
