Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is offering an Apprenticeship as a Train Driver (Level 3) at Totton, with a structured programme combining classroom study, practical training and on-the-job experience. You will learn to safely prepare, operate and drive MPVs supporting Network Rail's seasonal programmes, with day-one mentoring and a strong focus on safety and professional development.

Qualifications

• GCSEs or equivalent required for entry into the apprenticeship program.
• Ambition to start a career in rail and safety-critical environments.
• Good communication and teamwork for on-site training.

Responsibilities

• Carry out pre-service safety checks and prepare trains for service.
• Monitor train performance and respond to operational situations.
• Maintain concentration and make safe decisions in a safety-critical environment.
• Communicate effectively with signallers, control teams and colleagues.
• Demonstrate understanding of railway safety standards and safe systems of work.
• Complete practical driving hours, route learning and assessments.
• Identify and report faults or issues per procedures.
• Maintain training records and progress toward authorised Train Driver status.
• Develop professionalism and independence in a regulated setting.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to support safe train services.
