Role Overview

As a Band 2 Radiographic Assistant within the Radiology and Imaging Service, you will deliver high-quality, patient-centred care and administrative support under the supervision of Radiologists, Radiographers, and Nurses. Operating across hospital sites (BRI, St Luke's Hospital) and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs), you will assist with direct patient care, hygiene, chaperones, patient transport, equipment decontamination, and departmental stock management. Flexible working-including evenings, weekends, and occasional night shifts is required.

Key Requirement: Community X-Ray Car Service

In addition to site-based duties, you will be expected to work as part of the Community X-Ray Car Service. In this role, you will support mobile diagnostic imaging delivery directly in community settings, care homes, and patient residences, assisting with equipment setup, patient handling, safety, and operational workflow outside the main hospital environment.

Main duties of the job
  • Direct Patient Care: Assist patients with mobility, dressing, personal hygiene, and toilet access; chaperone and support patients during diagnostic examinations while maintaining privacy, dignity, and respect.

Community X-Ray Car Service: Actively participate in the mobile community service-assisting radiographers with equipment setup, patient handling, safety protocols, and workflow in care homes, community hubs, and domestic settings.

Clinical & Area Preparation: Prepare rooms, equipment, and sterile/non-sterile consumables for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; clean and decontaminate imaging equipment between patients in line with Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) policies.

Operational & Stock Management: Monitor, unpack, and replenish clinical stock across work areas; report shortages or discrepancies to senior staff.

Administrative & IT Support: Register patients, retrieve previous imaging records, input data into the Radiology Information System (RIS), receive phone calls, and handle clinical communications.

Health, Safety & Radiation Compliance: Adhere strictly to Trust health and safety, COSHH, Data Protection, and Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR/IR(ME)R); report incidents using the Trust's Risk Incident Reporting System.

Teamwork & Flexible Working: Work flexibly across BRI, SLH, and CDC sites, including evenings, weekends, and occasional night shifts; participate in clinical audits, quality control, and NVQ development tasks as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Escort, prepare, and chaperone patients during imaging procedures while protecting their privacy and dignity.

Assist patients with dressing, undressing, mobility, personal hygiene, toilet access, and nutrition/hydration where required.

2. Community X-Ray Car Service Support

Deploy as part of the mobile X-ray car team to deliver outpatient diagnostic imaging across community sites, residential care facilities, and home environments.

Support radiographers with mobile equipment transport, safe positioning of frail/vulnerable patients, radiation safety zone management, and off-site workflow.

3. Clinical Area Preparation & Infection Control

Prepare examination rooms and clinical work areas prior to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Clean and decontaminate imaging equipment between patients in strict accordance with Trust Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) guidelines.

Unpack, monitor, and replenish consumable clinical stock levels across all working areas.

4. Administration & Systems Management

Undertake clerical tasks including registering patients, retrieving prior imaging records, and logging data on the Radiology Information System (RIS).

Handle incoming calls, transmit clinical messages, and manage communications across multidisciplinary hospital and primary care teams.

5. Governance, Safety & Professional Development

Adhere to Trust policies, Health & Safety at Work standards, COSHH, Data Protection, and Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR/IR(ME)R).

Report clinical incidents or hazards via the Trust’s Risk Incident Reporting System (Datix) and complete all mandatory training.

Work flexibly across sites (BRI, SLH, CDC) including out-of-hours shifts (evenings, weekends, occasional nights) and engage in audit, quality control, or NVQ competencies.

Experience
  • Care work in a care home, community care or hospital setting
  • Working with members of the public
Skills
  • Good verbal and written command of English.
  • Basic Numeracy skills (demonstrated through qualifications or experience)
  • Good basic IT skills
Knowledge
  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
  • BLS
  • Moving and handling training
Qualifications
  • Minimum NVQ/QCF Diploma or Apprenticeship at Level 2 in Health & Social Care,or in Support Work
  • Care Certificate
Other Requirements
  • Holds a valid UK driving licence to drive the Community X-Ray service vehicle.
