Overview

Radiation Safety is a core part of the Safety team at Tokamak Energy, focusing on protecting workers, the public, and the environment from ionising radiation hazards.

The Radiation Safety Officer ensures compliance with IRR17 and permit conditions under EPR16 for radioactive waste management. As the subject matter expert, they serve as a key contact for regulatory bodies.

The role involves leading the Health Physics team, developing safety procedures, and supporting operational activities involving ionising radiation, including fusion-related processes.

Requirements
  • Reporting to the EHS Manager, responsible for radiological protection across the organisation.
  • Manage and mentor the Health Physics team.
  • Advise senior management on radiation legislation and compliance.
  • Develop and review RRAs, SOPs, and safety documentation.
  • Lead radiation protection training initiatives.
  • Guide teams on the safe handling and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Prepare for audits and inspections by regulatory agencies.
  • Support the EHS Manager with broader safety duties.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Recognised qualification in radiation protection (e.g., RPA2000).
  • Extensive knowledge of IRR17, EPR16, and related guidance.
  • Leadership experience managing technical teams.
  • Strong communication and reporting skills.
  • Experience with radioactive waste management.
  • Attention to detail and data analysis skills.
  • Emergency response capabilities.
  • Experience with non-ionising radiation safety (e.g., laser, EMF).
  • Environmental or H&S NEBOSH qualification or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of fusion-specific regulation.
  • Chartered status (e.g., CRadP) or in progress.
  • Understanding of radiation transport regulations.
