Overview

Radiation Safety is a core part of the Safety team at Tokamak Energy, focusing on protecting workers, the public, and the environment from ionising radiation. The Radiation Safety Officer ensures compliance with IRR17 and permit conditions under EPR16, acting as a key contact for regulatory bodies. The role involves leading the Health Physics team, developing safety procedures, and supporting operational programs involving ionising radiation, including fusion activities and radioactive waste management.

Requirements

  1. Reporting to the EHS Manager, responsible for radiological protection across the organisation.
  2. Lead and manage the Health Physics team, including performance reviews and professional development.
  3. Provide radiation protection advice to senior management and ensure compliance with legislation and emerging frameworks.
  4. Develop and review RRAs, SOPs, Local Rules, and contingency plans.
  5. Lead radiation protection training across the company.
  6. Guide teams on safe use, transport, storage, security, and disposal of radioactive materials.
  7. Support audits and inspections by external regulators.
  8. Assist the EHS Manager with additional safety duties to promote a strong safety culture.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Recognised qualification in radiation protection (e.g., RPA2000 Certificate or eligibility).
  • Knowledge of IRR17, EPR16, and related guidance.
  • Experience managing technical teams and mentoring.
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills.
  • Experience with radioactive waste management.
  • Strong attention to detail and data analysis skills.
  • Emergency response capability.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with non-ionising radiation safety.
  • Environmental or H&S NEBOSH qualification.
  • Knowledge of fusion-specific regulation.
  • Chartered status (e.g., CRadP) or in progress.
  • Understanding of radiation transport regulation (CDG, IAEA SSR-6).
