Job summary

IonQ in Oxford, UK is seeking a Physicist, System Operations to operate, maintain and improve trapped-ion quantum computers. You will own day-to-day maintenance and drive reliability across cross-functional teams to keep systems available and well understood.

This on-site role collaborates with teams in Bothell, College Park and Daejeon to scale operational excellence in our quantum platforms.

Qualifications

• Strong experimental background in physics or optical engineering.
• Hands-on experience with complex hardware systems in lab environment.
• Ability to operate in fast-moving settings and own system reliability.

Responsibilities

• Participate in follow-the-sun on-call rotations to support uptime.
• Take ownership of regular and emergency maintenance activities.
• Build and maintain observability, automation and operational practices.
• Interpret telemetry and system behaviour to diagnose issues and guide troubleshooting.
• Work collaboratively across teams, time zones and locations.
