Quantity Surveyor - Civil Engineering / NEC

M5 Corridor - Midlands to South West | £80,000 - £100,000 + Package

We are looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join an established civil engineering contractor delivering significant civils and groundworks packages across the Midlands and South West.

This is a senior commercial opportunity for somebody with a strong civil engineering background and excellent NEC contract knowledge who wants responsibility for commercially managing their own projects.

Projects typically range from approximately £1m to £10m, with work across education, schools, DfE programmes, MOD/MOJ, prisons, commercial developments and wider public-sector construction.

Geographically, projects will broadly follow the M5 corridor, from the Midlands through to the South West and potentially as far as Plymouth.

The Role

As Quantity Surveyor, you'll take commercial responsibility for civil engineering packages from procurement and mobilisation through delivery and ultimately final account.

You'll work closely with Project Managers and operational teams to ensure projects are commercially controlled and that contractual risks and opportunities are identified early.

This is a role for a QS who wants to understand what's happening operationally on their projects rather than simply producing reports at the end of each month.

NEC Knowledge

Strong NEC experience is a key requirement.

You should be comfortable working within the mechanisms of NEC contracts and understand the importance of proactive contract management.

You'll need experience dealing with early warnings, compensation events, programme implications, change control and contractual correspondence, ensuring the company's commercial position is properly protected throughout delivery.

What Are We Looking For?

Ideally, you'll have a strong background in civil engineering or groundworks rather than purely building/main contracting.

• Strong civil engineering Quantity Surveying experience
• Excellent NEC contract knowledge
• Experience commercially managing projects/packages from circa £1m-£10m
• Strong CVR and forecasting ability
• Subcontractor procurement and account management
• Experience managing compensation events and contractual change
• Excellent commercial and contractual awareness
• Confidence dealing with Tier 1 contractor commercial teams
• Strong negotiation skills
• Excellent record keeping and attention to detail
• A relevant Quantity Surveying qualification ideally

Previous experience across schools, DfE programmes, MOD/MOJ or prison projects would be a distinct advantage.

The Projects

You'll be commercially managing a varied portfolio of civil engineering works which can include bulk earthworks, drainage, foundations, reinforced concrete, highways, Section 278 works, utilities, external works and associated infrastructure.

That variety is a major attraction of the role - you're not going to be pricing and commercially managing the same type of project repeatedly.

Location

Projects will predominantly follow the M5 corridor, covering the Midlands and moving south through Worcestershire and Gloucestershire into the South West, with requirements potentially extending as far as Plymouth.

Flexibility to travel to projects is therefore essential.
