Job summary

Bovis is seeking a skilled Quantity Surveyor (Commercial Manager) to lead the commercial activities on a major project in the Northern home counties. You will oversee procurement, post-contract management and value engineering in collaboration with the client team.

The role requires a degree in Quantity Surveying (MRICS preferred) and a strong track record in complex construction with main contractors. Expect extensive on-site work and a focus on cost control and risk management.

Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Quantity Surveyor (Commercial Manager) to join our private sector construction business on on a major project in the Northern home counties. You will be working on the commercial Procurement and Post Contract Management of works packages, whilst in the pre con phase of the project.

Key responsibilities:

As Commercial Manager, you will lead and manage the commercial activities for the project. You will be running a project or a complex section of a large project.

  • Procurement of the project in accordance with approved strategy, ensuring that orders are fully scoped, bought at best value and are correctly contracted in accordance with limits of authority.
  • Liaising and communicating with the Client team in accordance with the contract. Managing supply chain relationships to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach to procurement.
  • Robust implementation and management of commercial, legal, insurance and risk controls of the Project (including but not limited to OLi and PMTR/PID's).
  • Accurate commercial reporting and contract administration. This includes (but is not limited to) interim payments, management of change accounts, cashflows, final accounting and contract administration.
  • You will ensure that the project is delivered in a safe, timely, efficient and sustainable manner, whilst achieving project targets, meeting client expectations and enhancing the reputation of the business.
  • Maintain CSCS card for the role
  • Professional Construction Qualifications relevant to the role or qualified by appropriate level of experience (as noted below)
  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or other construction related degree
  • Have a related Chartership such as MRICS

  • Management of claims including assessment of entitlement for prolongation, loss and Expense including inflation
  • Knowledge of current construction laws, legislations, and regulations, standards and procedures
  • Commercial and financial understanding in the above context – ability to contribute to value engineering as part of the design process
  • Understand and apply commercial & financial procedures and reporting systems
  • Maintains detailed prelim forecasts and actual costs and intervenes were negative trends identified
  • Management of bonds, PCGs, warranty insurances and associated risks
  • Management of cost, value and profit
  • Reports accurately to the monthly forecast final account
  • Manages cash flow to the benefit of the project and business
  • Good understanding of building technology / construction methods
  • Full knowledge and understanding of JCT, NEC, Construction Management and Management Contracting Contracts
  • Background with a main contractor on projects above £30m in value
  • Proven track record of delivering successful construction projects safely
  • Experience of managing field construction activities on major/complex projects
  • Demonstratable experience in construction, including a sound knowledge of Construction methodology, process and sequence
  • Procurement of work packages in line with the Project Procurement Strategy
  • Conversion of the project from preconstruction to construction
  • Communicating and liaising with the Client team in accordance with the contract
  • Production of Tender Recommendation Reports and Contract Sum Analysis
  • Preparation of Subcontracts for execution in line with limits of authority
  • Procures robust packages with an understanding of package interfaces
  • Manages the change process in accordance with the contract
  • Prepares bid documentation to ensure a fully defined tender
  • Proven track record in construction including a sound knowledge of Construction methodology, process and sequence.
  • Flexibility and openness of approach and willingness to work as a team player
  • Must lead in the Incident and Injury Free (IIF) vision, both personal and organisational, to create an existence absent of incident and injury
  • Supports the project manager to manage project risk and opportunities
  • Levelling existing knowledge to continuously improve processes to achieve efficiency.
  • Attention to detail, ability to flex to meet business plans and drive to meet key dates.
  • Ability to join up a wide range of complex issues and understand how they relate to each other.
  • Uncompromising discipline and rigorous approach to follow the process and close projects out.
  • Collaborates across the organisation and external teams. Communicates the strategy and maximises outcomes for all parties.
  • Drives a culture of safety and quality and embeds best practice to set the standard in the organisation and the industry.
