J. Murphy & Sons Ltd. is seeking a Quantity Surveyor to support energy projects on the Western Isles corridor, with an on-site role based at Tornagrain and later Jamestown relocation.

You will contribute to valuations, cost reporting, procurement, and contract administration, ensuring robust financial control and adherence to NEC and measurement standards. The role requires a HND/degree and proven commercial QS experience, with RICS/ICES registration and progression toward chartership.

Qualifications

  • HND or degree in quantity surveying or a related field.
  • Proven experience in a commercial role (Assistant QS or QS).
  • Registered with RICS/ICES and working towards chartership.
  • Knowledge of NEC contracts and standard measurement methods.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with internal commercial reporting and other required reports.
  • Prepare valuations/payments with full documentation per contract.
  • Provide cost reports to client with compliant documentation.
  • Manage subcontract and material procurement schedules.
  • Administer subcontractor and supplier accounts from requisitions to final accounts.
  • Handle contract administration, changes, and registers.
  • Identify commercial risks, opportunities, and value engineering.
  • Apply cost coding to satisfy internal and external needs.
  • Measure quantities per standard methods and assist final accounts.

Murphy is recruiting for a Quantity Surveyor to work with Energy on on Western Isles linear cable scheme. The role will be based at Tornagrain, IV2 7AE until January 2027 and will then relocate to Jamestown, IV14 9ED.

A day in the life of a Murphy Quantity Surveyor
  • Aid in the internal commercial reporting and any other reports which may be required.
  • Prepare Valuations/Applications for Payment with full documentation in accordance with the contract
  • Control of Cost Reports to the Client with contractually compliant documentation
  • Preparation and management of subcontract and material procurement schedules
  • Administration of subcontractor/supplier accounts from the preparation of detailed requisitions, monitoring, and authorisation of subcontract payments through to agreement of final accounts
  • Undertake the contract administration, including change management and maintain associated registers.
  • Identifying commercial risks, opportunities, value engineering and change
  • Use the cost allocation/coding which satisfies both internal and external requirements.
  • Measurement of quantities in accordance with the standard methods of measurement as required.
  • Assist in the preparation of project final accounts.
  • Drafting of subcontracts including professional services.

  • Proven experience within a Commercial role i.e., Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Quantity Surveyor, or a similar role.
  • Registered with RICS / ICES and working towards chartership.
  • Knowledge of Standard Forms of Contract, NEC preferable together with Standard Methods of Measurement
