Job summary

Careys in Middlesbrough is seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join our Commercial team and drive the commercial success of our major infrastructure projects. You will manage day-to-day commercial activities, including valuations, variations and cost reports, ensuring projects stay within contractual and financial objectives.

We value a proactive, detail-oriented approach and strong NEC contracts knowledge, with 3–5 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years' experience in Quantity Surveying or Assistant QS.
  • Experience with valuations, variations, cost reports and CVRs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day commercial management of work packages.
  • Prepare and maintain cost reports, forecasts and CVRs.
  • Monitor project budgets and identify commercial risks and opportunities.
  • Manage subcontractor procurement, administration and payments.
  • Support change control processes and contractual compliance.
  • Build relationships with clients, subcontractors and project teams.
  • Provide commercial guidance to operational teams.
  • Assist in risk registers and early warning processes.
  • Contribute to delivery of major infrastructure projects.
  • Mentor Assistant Quantity Surveyors, Graduates and Trainees where appropriate.

Department: Commercial (Quantity Surveying)

Description

We’re looking for an experienced, detail‑driven Quantity Surveyor to join our team and play a key role in the commercial success of our projects. If you’re confident working with stakeholders at all levels, thrive in fast‑paced environments, and have a strong grasp of NEC contracts and construction processes, we’d love to hear from you.

What you will be doing

As a Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for the day-to-day commercial management of one or more work packages, ensuring projects are delivered commercially, contractually and financially in line with business objectives.

Key responsibilities will include
  • Managing valuations, applications for payment and variations.
  • Preparing and maintaining cost reports, forecasts and CVRs.
  • Monitoring project budgets and identifying commercial risks and opportunities.
  • Managing subcontractor procurement, administration and payments.
  • Supporting change control processes and contractual compliance.
  • Building strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors and project teams.
  • Supporting operational teams with commercial advice and guidance.
  • Assisting in the preparation and management of risk registers and early warning processes.
  • Contributing to the successful commercial delivery of a major infrastructure project.
  • Supporting and mentoring Assistant Quantity Surveyors, Graduates and Trainees where appropriate
What you will bring

We're looking for a commercially aware and ambitious individual with approximately 3-5 years' experience within a Quantity Surveying or Assistant Quantity Surveying role.

You will ideally have
  • Experience working within civil engineering, infrastructure, groundworks or construction environments.
  • Knowledge of NEC contracts and commercial processes.
  • Experience preparing valuations, variations, cost reports and CVRs.
  • Strong commercial awareness and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • The ability to build effective working relationships across project teams.
  • A proactive approach with a willingness to learn and take ownership.
  • A degree in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline
