Steel doesn't leave a fabrication yard as a finished product by accident.
Every tonne has been priced, measured, ordered, fabricated and ultimately paid for, and this is the role that makes sure the commercial side of that equation adds up.
As Quantity Surveyor, you'll sit at the centre of major structural steel projects, working alongside Project Managers, Estimators and the fabrication team to protect margin, control costs and make sure the business is paid for the work it delivers.
You'll be involved from tender through to final account.
You'll review drawings and steelwork packages, produce quantities and valuations, manage variations and keep a close eye on where projects are heading commercially.
When additional work is instructed, you'll make sure it is identified, valued and recovered rather than disappearing into the job.
You'll also monitor subcontract costs, forecast final accounts and cash flow, and flag commercial risks early enough for the project team to do something about them.
This isn't a role where you'll be watching spreadsheets from a distance.
You'll be working closely with the people actually delivering the steel, understanding what is being fabricated, what is happening on site and how that translates into commercial performance.
You’ll be working on steel that becomes part of rail, highways, energy and major construction projects, infrastructure that people rely on every day.
You’ll have the support of an established commercial team while working directly with the people delivering the projects.
And because you’re working within a specialist steel fabricator rather than a huge contractor, your decisions won’t disappear into layers of management. You’ll be able to see the effect your commercial work has on the projects and the wider business.
If you’re a Quantity Surveyor who understands that good commercial management starts with understanding the steel itself, this could be worth a conversation.
